2010 Waiver Wire – Week 1

With so many fantasy baseball drafts or auctions occurring before opening day, here is a look at several types of leagues with players that might be potentially available on the waiver wire to go after in week 1.

12 / 15 team mixed league:

1B – Daric Barton – it’s easy to forget that he just turned 24. Hasn’t really displayed much power in the minor leagues but with a career minor league batting average of .293 and an OBP of .407 he should be on base to score a fair amount of runs. Barton is hitting .283 this spring with 21 walks and 12 strikeouts in 67 plate appearances.

SS – Ian Desmond – Desmond claimed the starting shortstop job with the Washington Nationals and should be good for 10+ home runs and around 20 stolen bases this season. Desmond is currently hitting .333 with 15 RBI and six stolen bases.

SS – Mike Aviles – underwent Tommy John surgery last summer and seemed buried on the depth chart when spring started, but his hitting has positioned him to possibly begin the season in the starting lineup. Aviles is hitting .469 with eight RBI and a stolen base so far this spring.

3B – David Freese - won the 3B job for the St. Louis Cardinals and should have a little extra breathing room with Julio Lugo traded. Freese is hitting .294 with 11 RBI, a home run and a stolen base in spring.

OF – Michael Brantley – if you are short on stolen bases, Brantley is a nice pick up with Russell Branyan headed for the disabled list.

OF – Sean Rodriguez – should get the start at second base for the Tampa Bay Rays. Rodriguez is hitting .459 with six home runs and 17 RBI.

OF – Brett Gardner – Gardner is another option along with Brantley if your team is short on stolen bases.

SP – Jaime Garcia – won the 5th starter job with the St. Louis Cardinals with a 1.93 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.

RP – Franklin Morales – should be in line for a handful of saves in the month of April with Huston Street out of action.

RP – Jon Rauch – was recently named the closer for the Minnesota Twins, although his career save percentage of 59% does not bode well for long-term success.

American League Only:

SS – Julio Lugo – traded to the Baltimore Orioles, could see 300 at bats backing up a variety of infield positions

SP – David Hernandez – was named 5th starter of the Baltimore Orioles. He has a 3.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 15 innings thus far in spring.

SP – Dana Eveland – won a rotation spot with the Toronto Blue Jays

SP – Daniel Hudson – Freddy Garcia has been brutal this spring with a 10.38 ERA and 40 hits allowed in 21 2/3 innings; worth rostering for later in the season if you have space on your bench.

SP - C.J. Wilson – worth a flier with his move into the Texas rotation.

National League Only:

1B – Mike Jacobs – good source of power as he fills in for the injured Daniel Murphy.

OF – Willie Harris / Willy Taveras – they will be platooned in Washington, Harris will get you more overall counting stats while Taveras will provide stolen bases. Harris will see most of the at bats hitting from the left side.

OF – Tony Gwynn Jr. – another speed option if you need steals.

OF – Jim Edmonds – chance for 400 at bats filling in for Gomez / Hart.

SP - Nate Robertson - new Florida Marlins starter has been decent this spring. Hasn’t had a good season since 2006 but move to the NL should help his numbers somewhat.

SP – Kyle Kendrick / Jamie Moyer – I could win 10 games with the Philadelphia Phillies offense behind me.

SP – Tom Gorzelanny - has earned a job in the Chicago Cubs rotation with a 3.32 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

SP – Mike Leake / Travis Wood – whomever claims the 5th starter job with the Cincinnati Reds.

SP – Charlie Haeger – just to say you own a knuckleballer.

2010 Fantasy Baseball ADP – Rising / Falling

With the last week of fantasy baseball drafts upon us, here is a look at some of the players with changes to their average draft position (ADP), based on a 15 team mixed league.

Rising:

Jose Reyes (round 1-4) – it all depends on your league and your level of risk but I saw him being drafted from the end of the first round until the middle of the fourth round in various drafts this past weekend.

Mike Napoli (round 8-9) – Napoli’s power outburst in spring training has him going ahead of some catchers strictly based on his spring training stats which is a mistake.

Jason Heyward (round 10) – the announcement that Heyward has won the starting job for the Atlanta Braves has pushed him up to the 10th round in recent drafts.

Chris Perez (round 13) – the injury to Kerry Wood opened the door for Perez as the Indians closer. There is no reason to expect Wood to return as the closer when he returns unless Perez falters in the role. With Wood a free agent at the end of this season unless he hits 55 games finished in 2010, the most likely scenario in which he closes is if he is traded to another team.

Sean Rodriguez (round 16) – remember that he only qualifies at outfield to begin the season so don’t wait until the late rounds of the draft thinking you are going to grab him at second base. His strikeout rate from his previous stints in the major leagues is still some cause for concern going forward.

Speed / Power combo outfielders – I think there was a lot of surprise this past weekend in drafts as speed / power combo outfielders were taken much higher than their average draft position. Guys like Nelson Cruz, Carlos Gonzalez, Andrew McCutchen, etc. were all going a round or two higher. If you are targeting those types of hitters in drafts this weekend, you might need to bump them up your draft board.

Falling:

Brian Roberts (round 4) – injury concerns of his back and a possible drop in stolen bases has dropped him a round in drafts.

Lance Berkman (round 8) – injury concerns plus the possibility of him starting the season on the disabled list has dropped his average draft position by three to four rounds.

Huston Street (round 13) – another injured player that dropped four rounds based on the uncertainty of his status.

Carlos Beltran (round 13-15) – it still looks like he will be back around the end of April / early part of May assuming he does not have any setbacks. Expect a decrease in stolen bases when he does return.

Spring Training News & Notes from the weekend

Here is a look at the Spring Training News & Notes from the weekend. The news & notes are focused on changes that affect players value as well as players coming back off of injuries or rookies that might make an impact.

Hitters:

Sean Rodriguez hit his 4th home run of the spring as is solidifying a spot on the Tampa Bay Rays roster. His ability to play all over the diamond could get him 300-400 at bats this year.

Chris Davis of the Texas Rangers seems to have a much better approach at the plate in early spring with only four strikeouts in 26 at bats.

Logan Morrison of the Florida Marlins is hitting his way out of a job in his battle with Gaby Sanchez at first base. Morrison is hitting .087 with two hits in 23 at bats.

Pitchers:

Stephen Strasburg tossed three shutout innings with two strikeouts on Sunday. As mentioned in earlier columns, I still expect him to open the season in the major leagues. He has been going in the 12-15 round range in 15 team league drafts this past week.

With all the hype around Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes as the New York Yankees 5th starter, Alfredo Aceves may be quietly sneaking in the back door. Aceves tossed four innings of one-run ball on Saturday and is in the mix to grab the last rotation spot.

Milwaukee got back-to-back good outings from the end of the rotation over the weekend with Manny Parra tossing four innings, allowing one run with three strikeouts and David Bush also going four innings with four strikeouts and giving up a lone run. While maybe not the magic worker like Dave Duncan is, you have to think that new pitching coach Rick Peterson is going to be able to make improvements to some of the Milwaukee starters that struggled last season.

With Madison Bumgarner struggling in camp, it looks like the San Francisco Giants may have two other options in Todd Wellemeyer and rookie Kevin Pucetas. Pucetas tossed three shutout innings on Sunday with a strikeout and Wellemeyer tossed four scoreless innings on Friday.

Closers:

Jon Rauch was touched up for two runs in an inning of work while Matt Guerrier pitched a scoreless inning as the current top two contenders to replace Joe Nathan barring a trade.

Jason Frasor allowed four runs in 1/3 of an inning while Kevin Gregg tossed a scoreless inning as the battle continues for the Toronto Blue Jays closer role.

Spring Training News & Notes from Tuesday

Here is a look at the Spring Training News & Notes from Tuesday. The news & notes are focused on changes that affect players value as well as players coming back off of injuries or rookies that might make an impact.

Hitters:

Sean Rodriguez has been seeing time all over the diamond in spring training and could turn into a super utility player for the Tampa Bay Rays like Ben Zobrist was last season.

Garrett Jones went two-for-three with three RBI and his first home run of the spring. I like him more as a first basemen where you can get more value from his stolen bases.

Ian Desmond got a start in right field and stole his second base of spring for the Washington Nationals as he too could be looking at a super utility role backing up shortstop, second base and the outfield corner spots.

He struggled with injuries and a drop in power in 2009, but Rick Ankiel is a sneaky choice for late draft power if he can stay healthy for 450 at bats in 2010. He hit his first home run of the spring on Tuesday and should be able to hit 20+ home runs this season.

After hitting lead off 79% of the time in 2009, it looks like Ian Kinsler is set to enter the season hitting fifth in the order with Julio Borbon installed atop the lineup. It should mean an upgrade in RBI for Kinsler and push him into the 90+ range in 2010.

Pitchers:

I said last week I expect Stephen Strasburg to open the season in the major leagues and he took his first step toward doing that on Tuesday with two shutout innings and two strikeouts. Other people seem to be thinking that as well as I saw him go in the 12th round of a 15 team mock draft yesterday.

Chris Young of the San Diego Padres had an encouraging start after missing a good portion of 2009 due to surgery, tossing three shutout innings with two strikeouts.

The Daily Dirt for Saturday

by Todd Lammi

Torii Hunter hit three solo home runs, giving him four home runs in his last two games, in a 9-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Kendry Morales added his 10th home run of the season for the Los Angeles Angels.  Joe Saunders allowed one run in 8 1/3 innings with five strikeouts to up his record to 7-4. The win was the first for Saunders in his last four starts. The Angels made a couple of roster moves, sending Howie Kendrick to Triple-A and recalling second basemen Sean Rodriguez. Kevin Kouzmanoff was the lone offense for the Padres as he collected his seventh home run of the season. In other fantasy baseball news around the diamond on Saturday…

Hitters:

Albert Pujols went 3-for-4 and blasted two more home runs, giving him four home runs in his last three days.

Gary Sheffield went 2-for-5 and homered for the second consecutive day, giving him seven on the season. What fantasy baseball owner would have thought that Gary Sheffield would have more home runs than teammate David Wright at this point in the season?

Armando Rios went 4-for-4 with two RBI and delivered his 8th home run of the season. The home run was Rios’ second in the month of June, who also added his 10th stolen base of the season.

Cody Ross went 3-for-4 and homered for the second consecutive day. Ross now has 10 home runs on the season with 39 RBI.

Jeremy Hermida homered for the third time in five games and drove in two runs. Hermida has five consecutive multi-hit games and six RBI during that time.

Ryan Zimmerman picked up his 12th home run of the season, homering for this first time in his last 19 games. Zimmerman has seen his batting average fall 34 points since his 11th home run back on May 22nd.

Brian Roberts went 4-for-5 with two RBI and collected a double in his fifth straight game. Roberts is currently on pace for a 16 home run, 65 RBI, 31 steal season.

Adam Jones homered for the first time since May 26th and drove in three runs. Jones is now batting .324 on the season with 41 RBI.

Jose Lopez went 3-for-4 and homered for the fourth time this week, giving him nine home runs on the season.

Pitchers:

Rich Harden returned from the disabled list after missing three weeks with a mid-back strain, allowing two runs in six innings with nine strikeouts.

Anthony Swarzak tossed seven shutout innings and struck out six to even his mark at 2-2. After the game Swarzak was sent back to Triple-A so the Minnesota Twins could recall a position player.

Jose Contreras hurled eight innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits while striking out eight. It was the second straight scoreless start for Contreras since he returned from Triple-A on June 8th.

Zach Duke picked up his seventh win of the season, allowing three runs in eight innings with three strikeouts. Duke has been a work horse this year, as he currently sits second in the National League in innings pitched.

Pitching on two extra days rest due to a sore wrist, Roy Oswalt notched his third win of the season, allowing one run in seven innings with five strikeouts.

Randy Johnson allowed two runs in seven innings with three strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the season. Johnson has a 2.15 ERA in his last five starts.

Joe Saunders allowed one run in 8 1/3 innings with five strikeouts to up his record to 7-4. The win was the first for Saunders in his last four starts.

Minor League Report – week 10

by Todd Lammi

Second basemen Sean Rodriguez was recalled by the Los Angeles Angels from Triple-A to replace Howie Kendrick who was demoted. Rodriguez was hitting .273 with 21 home runs, 60 RBI and six stolen bases.

First basemen Logan Morrison (Marlins), out since April 10 with a fractured wrist, returned to action this week.

Jake Arrieta (Orioles) was promoted to Triple-A and tossed six innings with one run allowed and six strikeouts. On the season, Arrieta has a 2.49 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Tobi Stoner (Mets) was promoted to Triple-A after going 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA in Double-A. Stoner held hitters to a .170 average while striking out 28 in 47 innings.

The move to second bases is not affecting the offense of Alcides Escobar (Brewers) as he continues to excel at the plate. Escobar has hit .400 over his last 10 games with one home run, six RBI and four stolen bases.

Catcher Jason Castro (Astros) was recently promoted to Double-A after hitting .309 with seven home runs and 44 RI.

Outfielder Jordan Danks (White Sox) could be playing with brother John in the major leagues in 2010. Danks, currently in Double-A is batting .318 with six home runs, 32 RBI and eight steals between two levels.

Zach Stewart (Reds) has been even better since his promotion to Double-A, going 3-0 with a 0.62 ERA in five starts. For the season, Stewart has a 1.51 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings.

Travis Wood (Reds) is currently 6-3 in Double-A with a 1.11 ERA. Wood is holding opposing batters to an .181 average and has struck out 69 in 81 innings.

Third basemen Dayan Viciedo (White Sox) is slowly starting to turn his season around in Double-A. Viciedo is now hitting .277 on the season with four home runs and 37 RBI. After only three walks and 26 strikeouts in 116 at bats in May, Viciedo has three walks and three strikeouts in 45 at bats so far in June.

Fantasy Baseball – May Second Base Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May fantasy baseball statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for second basemen.

Brandon Phillips topped second basemen for the month of May. Knock on wood if you own him that he is able to continue playing with his injured thumb. Ian Kinsler ranked third in RBI despite his overall batting average dropping 43 points in the month of May. Pitchers were much more careful in the second month, as his walk total doubled from eight in April to 17 in May. Dan Uggla was in the doldrums for much of May until the last 12 days when he hit all five home runs and drove in 12 runs.

Dustin Pedroia is hitting for average with some steals thrown in, but the power from 2008 has not carried over into 2009 so far. Missing from the list that will see time in June are recent call ups Alexi Casilla of the Minnesota Twins and Edwin Maysonet, filling in for the injured Kaz Matsui in Houston. If Howie Kendrick continues to struggle, the Los Angeles Angels might reach down into Triple-A for Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez is hitting .284 with 18 home runs, 54 RBI and six stolen bases.
