2010 Waiver Wire – Week 11

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 11.

American League only:

1B – Mike Carp – Carp was called up by the Seattle Mariners at the beginning of the week and has moved into the starting line up at first base as the Mariners look to add some juice to their offense. Carp was hitting .250 in Triple-A with 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 184 at bats before being recalled.

SS – Omar Vizquel – Vizquel has moved into the starting line up for the Chicago White Sox thanks to the injury to Mark Teahen. He should score a few runs and steal a couple of bases during his time as a full-time starter. He hit second Thursday night and delivered his first home run of the season.

SP – Jake Arrieta – I wrote about Arrieta earlier in the minor league report this week.  His control issues make him a risky play in a mixed league format, especially starting against American League East teams, but in an AL format, his strikeouts give him some value going forward.

OF – Ryan Raburn – with Magglio Ordonez sidelined with an oblique injury, Raburn could see some additional at bats over the next week or two. His numbers have been less than stellar this season with a .179 batting average and no home runs in 78 at bats, but he does have some thump in his bat.

National League only:

OF – Roger Bernadina - Bernadina seems to have found a home in right field for the Washington Nationals. He does not have any standout skills, but he has been quietly consistent since moving into a starting role. If you project his stats out over 500+ at bats, his line reads 10 home runs, 80 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

12 /15 mixed league:

OF – Jose Tabata – with so few stolen base options available on the waiver wire at this time of the season, a player that gets called up from the minor leagues with speed immediately becomes a top target for free agent budgets. Hitting lead off in Pittsburgh, Tabata should be able to score a decent amount of runs and could steal 15-20 bases over the course of the remainder of the season.

OF – Mike Stanton – after tearing up Double-A pitching Stanton debuted in the Florida Marlins line up this week, hitting seventh and playing in right field. Definitely worth picking up if you need home runs and can support what is to be an expected lower batting average with his propensity for striking out.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 10

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 10.

American League:

The Detroit Tigers called up Danny Worth and sent down Adam Everett, so if you still have Worth reserved in an AL only format from earlier in the year, he should see time over Ramon Santiago at shortstop next week. Worth was hitting .287 in Triple-A with two home runs, 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

Orlando Hudson, out of action since May 30th is expected to go on the disabled list sometime in the next few days. Also at risk to go on the disabled list is shortstop J.J. Hardy who was out of action just a short time ago and is still experiencing pain in his wrist. It was not a pretty sight to see the Minnesota infield on Sunday with a combination of Brendan Harris at first base, Matt Tolbert at second base, Nick Punto at shortstop and Danny Valencia at third base, with all four hitters batting under .225.

Doug Fister is headed to the disabled list for the Seattle Mariners and will be replaced in the rotation by either recently recalled Luke French or by Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Minor league pitcher Jake Arrieta was scratched from his start on Saturday and could be headed to the major leagues in either a starter or relief role. If your league allows for daily transactions, I would watch the news on him closely this week as he could have in impact if he gets some starts. I wrote more about him in the minor league report earlier this week.

With Macier Izturis hobbled by a sore knee, Kevin Frandsen could see some additional at bats at third base this week for the Los Angeles Angels. Frandsen is hitting .452 in 31 at bats in a limited role so far in 2010.

National League:

The big news in the National League is the arrival of two rookies on Tuesday with Stephen Strasburg arriving for the Washington Nationals and Mike Stanton coming up for the Florida Marlins. Strasburg is a two-start starter in week 10 which makes him obviously a player to activate. Stanton should move right into the starting line up and hit seventh. Stanton is still a major risk to your fantasy baseball team’s batting average with his high strikeout rate, but if your team needs home runs and RBI, then I would have him active for this week.

Third basemen David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals is likely out of action until next weekend in order to rest his ankle. He did get one at bat on Sunday in a pinch-hit appearance and could fill that role for half of next week.

Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves is expected to miss the first game or two and possibly more next week as he continues to battle an injured finger which means Omar Infante will see additional time in week 10.

The Minor League Report – Week 4

The call ups continued last week as Wilson Ramos was promoted by the Minnesota Twins from the minor leagues in week 4. Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg received a promotion to Triple-A and while Mike Stanton has been going nuts at the plate, the Florida Marlins are keeping him at Double-A for now.

Stanton is hitting .360 on the season with 13 home runs and 29 RBI, despite striking out in 29% of his at bats. His slugging percentage is currently .884 with an OPS of 1.388 thanks to 25 walks drawn. It is only a matter of time before he is patrolling the outfield for the Marlins.

I have created a Minor League Tracker spreadsheet that shows all of the year-to-date stats for players that I highlighted in my team-by-team Triple-A minor league reports so you can easily keep an eye on possible players to target on the waiver wire in future weeks.

Hitters:

With A.J. Pierzynski struggling at catcher for the Chicago White Sox, keep an eye on Tyler Flowers in Triple-A. Flowers is hitting .284 with four home runs and 21 RBI on the season.

Outfielder Jose Tabata (Pitt.) has shown little power in 2010, but is hitting .340 with 10 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He should become a permanent fixture in the Pirates line up the second half of the season.

Ryan Strieby (Det.) and Desmond Jennings (TB) have both been out of action the past week due to injuries.

Pitchers:

Jeremy Hellickson (TB) carries a 5-0 record in Triple-A with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. With the way the Tampa Bay Rays rotation is going, Hellickson might end up pitching the second half of the season in relief barring an injury to a starter like David Price did in 2008.

Jay Jackson (Cubs) has a 1.50 ERA through six starts with a .90 WHIP ratio. Jackson has struck out 20 in 29 innings while allowing only seven walks.

Jake Arrieta (Balt.) has slowed down a little bit in his last two starts, walking nine in 11 innings with seven strikeouts. Despite those two games, he is still holding opposing hitters to a .165 batting average on the season with a 1.50 ERA.

The Toronto Blue Jays have more young pitchers on the way with Kyle Drabek in Double-A and Brad Mills in Triple-A coming up through the system. Mills has struck out at least six hitters in each of his five starts this season and now has 38 punchouts in 29 2/3 innings on the season to go along with his 3.03 ERA.

The Minor League Report – week 3

We saw two players get promoted that were part of the minor league report in week 2 with Justin Smoak getting recalled by the Texas Rangers and most recently Eric Young Jr. getting promoted by the Colorado Rockies.

2010 looks like it might be turning into the year of the first basemen with Ike Davis and Justin Smoak already promoted and Brett Wallace, Freddie Freeman and Chris Carter (Oak.) looming as potential call ups later this season.

I have created a Minor League Tracker spreadsheet that shows all of the year-to-date stats for players that I highlighted in my team-by-team Triple-A minor league reports so you can easily keep an eye on possible players to target on the waiver wire in future weeks.

Since we took a look at some of the top players from Triple-A last week, here is a view of some of the top prospects in Double-A.

Hitters:

Shortstop Starlin Castro (Cubs) is making it look easy at the plate in Double-A, hitting .382 with one home run, 15 RBI and four stolen bases. With as well as he played in spring training, it will only be a matter of time until he is up in Triple-A.

Outfielder Domonic Brown (Phi.) is hitting .325 with a home run and five RBI with one stolen base for the Reading Phillies. There is not much chance he sees time with the Phillies this season barring injury, but he should have a shot to open 2011 in the outfield with Jason Werth a free agent after this season.

Outfielder Mike Stanton (Fla.) is hitting .311 for the Jacksonville Suns with six home runs and 13 RBI. While he is still striking out a fair amount with 17 whiffs in 61 at bats, his plate discipline has come a long way in the last two years. Stanton has 16 walks through 16 games and an on base percentage of .462.

First basemen Lars Anderson (Bos.) is trying to regain his top prospect status, after a disappointing season at Double-A last year, a level he is now repeating. Anderson is hitting .328 with five home runs and 16 RBI through 58 at bats.

Shortstop Dee Gordon (LAD) of the Chattanooga Lookouts is hitting .354 with one home run and four RBI to go along with four stolen bases.

Third basemen Lonnie Chisenhall (Clev.) of the Akron Aeros is off to a good start average wise, hitting .358, but with no home runs and five RBI.

It has been a slow go so far for Dustin Ackley (Sea.), the second pick of the 2009 draft. Ackley is hitting just .153 in 59 at bats with two RBI and stolen bases. The only bright spot has been his plate discipline with nine walks against 10 strikeouts.

Pitchers:

Kyle Drabek (Tor.) has a 3.80 ERA through four starts with 20 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. Drabek has allowed two home runs and is holding hitters to a .228 average.

Jordan Lyles (Hous.) of the Corpus Christi Hooks has a 2.30 ERA after three starts with 16 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. I expect the Houston Astros to be aggressive in promoting him so he should see Triple-A by the second half of the season.

Andrew Cashner (Cubs) has struck out 29 hitters in 24 1/3 innings and has an ERA of 3.33 after four starts, while holding opposing batters to a .188 average. After striking out 10 in each of his first two starts, Cashner has come back to earth a little bit.

Chris Withrow (LAD) has gotten off to a slow start, with a 9.00 ERA after four starts with hitters knocking him around at a .303 clip and three home runs allowed.

Christian Friedrich (Col.) has struck out 16 in 16 1/3 innings with an ERA of 2.81 after three starts. Friedrich has found the going a little tougher in Double-A after striking out 159 in 119 2/3 innings.

Future closer Drew Storen (Was.) has three saves and a 1.23 ERA in 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Despite being overshadowed by teammate Stephen Strasburg, Storen could have some value as well later this year if the Nationals deal Matt Capps

The Minor League Report – Florida Marlins Triple-A Roster

Here is the minor league report for the 2010 New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate for the Florida Marlins.

The key name to note on the roster is first basemen Logan Morrison. He was in competition for the first base job in spring with the Florida Marlins before losing out to Gaby Sanchez. Walked more than he struck out last year with 63 walks vs. 46 whiffs. Career batting average is .289 with a one-year high in home runs of 24 in 2007.

Scott Cousins and Bryan Petersen, both outfielders, seem stuck in the same boat with not much room in the Marlins outfield unless Dan Uggla is traded and Chris Coghlan is moved to second base. In addition, the top prospect in the farm system Mike Stanton will likely jump over both of them once a job opens up so they may be both relegated to reserve outfielder status in the major leagues.

Another name to keep an eye on is pitcher Ryan Tucker. He was rushed to the major leagues at age 21 in 2008 and then missed almost all of 2009 due to knee surgery so his progress has been hampered somewhat. With a minor league WHIP of 1.39, he still needs a lot of work on his control before his next shot at the major leagues.

How they rank:

Baseball America: Morrison (2), Tucker (6), Cousins (9)
Keith Law: Morrison (2), Cousins (5), Petersen (6)
John Sickels: Morrison (2), Tucker (5), Cousins (7), Petersen (8)

Minor League Report – week 9

by Todd Lammi

The minor league transaction wire was buzzing this week with the promotion of Tommy Hanson, Gordon Beckham, Andrew McCutchen and Carlos Gonzalez to the major leagues. There were also notable names that were promoted to Double-A as well. Here is a recap of minor league baseball news and stats from week nine from a fantasy baseball perspective.

Hitters:

First basemen Yonder Alonso (Reds) was promoted to Double-A after hitting .302 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in Advanced A. Alonso is hitting .260 in six games so far at AA.

Outfielder Mike Stanton (Marlins) was moved to Double-A after hitting .294 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in Advanced A. He still has some work on reducing his strikeouts, after fanning 45 times in 180 at bats.

Buster Posey (Giants) is hitting .307 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in Advanced A to go along with five stolen bases. He should be on his way up to Double-A very shortly.

Catcher Jesus Montero (Yankees) was promoted to Double-A after hitting .356 with eight home runs and 37 RBI.

Third basemen Josh Vitters (Cubs) is hitting .351 with 13 home runs and 35 RBI in A ball. It is time for the Cubs to test him at a higher level.

Second basemen Matt Antonelli (Padres) is trying to work his way back to prospect status in Triple-A, but he is off to a slow start, hitting .143 with one home run and seven RBI in 84 at bats.

Pitchers:

Kyle Drabek was promoted to Double-A, tossing seven shutout innings in his first start with four strikeouts. Drabek finished Advanced A at 4-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.

Bradley Holt (Mets) was elevated to Double-A after going 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA in Advanced A. Holt struck out 50 hitters in 41 1/3 innings. In his first start at the new level, he went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and three strikeouts.

Mat Latos (Padres) tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 0.51 at Double-A.

Zach McAllister (Yankees) pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings with six strikeouts. McAllister in Double-A is now 5-2 with a 1.61 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings.

Chuck Lofgren (Indians) struggled in his first Triple-A start after being promoted, but was much better the second time around, hurling seven scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Edgar Osuna (Braves) was moved to Double-A and tossed seven innings of one-hit ball in his first start with four strikeouts. On the season, Osuna has a 2.82 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings.
