Fantasy Baseball – May Outfield Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May statistics, here is a breakdown of the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for outfielders.

Who needs Manny Ramirez? Juan Pierre was 12th among outfielders with 18 RBI in the month of May. Gerardo Parra (#23) seems to have successfully made the jump from AA to the major leagues with little problems. Although he does not have much power, think 10 home runs to 15 home runs max, he will hit close to .300 and drive in runs. Carl Crawford put up staggering numbers in May, with .355-28-3-15-21.

Nick Swisher has slowed down after his big April, with a line of .150-9-3-10-0 in May. Daniel Murphy has not been able to take advantage of the absence of Carlos Delgado, posting .176-8-3-10-0. Jordan Schafer was ticketed for Triple-A after going .158-8-0-5-1 with 40 strikeouts in 101 at bats. Dexter Fowler has struggled the second and third time around the league as pitchers adjusted, going .237-10-0-3-2.

Fantasy Baseball – May Third Base Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May statistics, here is a breakdown of the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for third basemen.

Evan Longoria continues to pace third basemen, and at his current rate looks like a top half of the first round pick in fantasy baseball drafts next year. David Wright has the average and steals but no power as I discussed earlier here.

Finally an Andy LaRoche sighting after several years of hype, but it looks like he has sacrificed power for batting average, which is not a good thing for fantasy baseball owners. Willy Aybar has a chance for regular at bats with Akinori Iwamura out for the season. Missing the top 30 were Melvin Mora .260-11-1-6-1 and Garrett Atkins .148-7-0-6-0. This would mark the third straight year that Atkins’ numbers have declined although no one could have anticipated such a huge drop off.

Fantasy Baseball – May Shortstop Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May fantasy baseball statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for shortstops. It has been a pretty topsy-turvy year at shortstop with top three shortstops Jose Reyes and Jimmy Rollins under performing, and the breakouts of Jason Bartlett and Marco Scutaro.

Miguel Tejada looked dead in April with zero home runs and four RBI but bounced back nicely in May to lead all shortstops in RBI.  Jason Bartlett will miss at least the first two weeks of June on the disabled list with a sprained ankle. Jerry Hairston Jr. has been one of the bright spots on offense for the Cincinnati Red, playing six different positions already this season.

At least Jimmy Rollins is stealing bases, because he is not displaying signs of picking up his batting average or hitting home runs any time soon. Stephen Drew looks lost at the plate, striking out 19 times in 65 at bats in May. Missing time early in the season on the disabled list with a hamstring injury did not help. It also does not help the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to bat him clean up when he is struggling which puts more pressure on him to produce. He struck out eight times in the last three games of May. Juan Castro had more RBI than Rafael Furcal in May and is good insurance to have on the bench in National League only leagues as Furcal battles through minor injuries.

Fantasy Baseball – May Second Base Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May fantasy baseball statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for second basemen.

Brandon Phillips topped second basemen for the month of May. Knock on wood if you own him that he is able to continue playing with his injured thumb. Ian Kinsler ranked third in RBI despite his overall batting average dropping 43 points in the month of May. Pitchers were much more careful in the second month, as his walk total doubled from eight in April to 17 in May. Dan Uggla was in the doldrums for much of May until the last 12 days when he hit all five home runs and drove in 12 runs.

Dustin Pedroia is hitting for average with some steals thrown in, but the power from 2008 has not carried over into 2009 so far. Missing from the list that will see time in June are recent call ups Alexi Casilla of the Minnesota Twins and Edwin Maysonet, filling in for the injured Kaz Matsui in Houston. If Howie Kendrick continues to struggle, the Los Angeles Angels might reach down into Triple-A for Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez is hitting .284 with 18 home runs, 54 RBI and six stolen bases.

Fantasy Baseball – May First Base Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May fantasy baseball statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for first basemen.

Mark Teixeira led they way at first base, thanks to the return of Alex Rodriguez to the line up. Ryan Howard is starting to pick up the pace in the power department although his batting average still lags in the .250 range.  Interesting to see that first base, usually thought of as a power position had three players in the top 10 with only two home runs for the month of May. Kotchman rebounded from the month of April where he had only four RBI and zero home runs. Despite all of the home runs that Adrian Gonzalez is hitting, the inability of the number one and two hitters in the San Diego Padres line up to get on base consistently limits his RBI chances.

Check out the player ranked at number 20, Mr. Albert Pujols. Despite his insistence that his left wrist is not affecting his performance, I have to believe the sudden drop off in numbers for Jorge Cantu from April to May is indeed affected by his injury. Much like the Boston Red Sox with David Ortiz, the Chicago Cubs face a dilemma with Derek Lee who is under performing this season. With Micah Hoffpauir performing just as well, do the Cubs consider platooning Lee with Hoffpauir, or make a trade for a first basemen?

Year to date:

Lee             .248 17-5-19-0 (141 at bats) – left / right split .278 / .244

Hoffpauir .281 9-4-16-0 (98 at bats) – left / right split .154 / .301

Fantasy Baseball – May Catcher Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, beginning with catchers. The catcher spot is one position that fantasy baseball owners have been burned by this season where owners selected someone in the top 12 rounds.

Joe Mauer was so dominant in the month of May that he doubled everyone’s RBI output outside of Victor Martinez. Omir Santos will likely not be in the top 10 for the month of June with Brian Schneider now back from injury for the New York Mets. Likewise for Chris Ianetta as he is currently on the disabled list for the Colorado Rockies.

Missing from the top 10 list for the month were Brian McCann .394 9-3-11-1, missed time due to eye problems, Geovany Soto .278-6-1-10, still trying to catch up at the plate after missing time early in the season with shoulder problems which seems to be affecting his power and Russell Martin, .330 13-0-9-7. Martin has been a disappointment based on his draft position with no home runs to date and a  .269 batting average for the season.  Recent call up Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles will have a chance to add his name to the list for the month of June.
