2010 Waiver Wire – Week 18

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for week 18.

American League:

OF – Travis Snider:  Remember him?  Snider has not played since mid-May but is expected to be activated this weekend and is going to help out at both corner outfield spots when he returns.  Snider is hitting .316 with four home runs and 16 RBI over his last 10 rehab games.

2B – Alexi Casilla – the injury to Orlando Hudson makes Casilla relevant for a few weeks in Minnesota. If your team is searching for stolen bases, he might be able to swipe a couple for you.

SP – Zach Britton:  Britton was going to be recalled from Triple-A to start Saturday but as of Thursday morning those plans have changed.  Britton has made five starts since being promoted to Triple-A with a 2.28 ERA.  The Orioles will likely call up the youngster prior to September to make a spot start.  He’s a guy I want on my bench until he is recalled.  One of the Oriole rookie pitchers has to work out.

OF – Mitch Moreland:  called up by the Texas Rangers with Ian Kinsler going on the disabled list, Moreland will see time at first base and in the outfield. Moreland was hitting .289 in Triple-A with 12 home runs and 65 RBI in 353 at bats with two stolen bases.

3B – Josh Bell: the trade of Miguel Tejada to San Diego opens the door for Bell to get extended playing time the rest of the season. Bell was hitting .278 in Triple-A for the season with 13 home runs and 50 RBI before being recalled Thursday. With a 23 walk to 78 strikeout ratio, it is best to temper expectation on his performance.

National League:

OF – Logan Morrison:  Due to another freak post game celebration, Chris Coghlan will be out for at least 6 weeks.  Morrison was hitting .307 with six homer runs and 45 RBI before being recalled and will be a platoon partner with Emilio Bonifacio for the Marlins.

RP – Joel Hanrahan:  If the Pirates do trade Octavio Dotel, Hanrahan would split closer duties with Evan Meek.  Hanrahan does have more experience in the closer role as he closed games when he was with the Nationals in 2008 and 2009.  In 44 2/3 innings of work this year, Hanrahan has 60 K’s vs. 14 walks with a 3.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.

Mixed Leagues:

OF – Luke Scott:  Since returning from the disabled list ten days ago, Scott has hit over .400 with five home runs and 11 RBI.  With 9 games played at first base this season, he might have additional roster eligibility depending on your league rules.

The Minor League Report – Florida Marlins Triple-A Roster

Here is the minor league report for the 2010 New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate for the Florida Marlins.

The key name to note on the roster is first basemen Logan Morrison. He was in competition for the first base job in spring with the Florida Marlins before losing out to Gaby Sanchez. Walked more than he struck out last year with 63 walks vs. 46 whiffs. Career batting average is .289 with a one-year high in home runs of 24 in 2007.

Scott Cousins and Bryan Petersen, both outfielders, seem stuck in the same boat with not much room in the Marlins outfield unless Dan Uggla is traded and Chris Coghlan is moved to second base. In addition, the top prospect in the farm system Mike Stanton will likely jump over both of them once a job opens up so they may be both relegated to reserve outfielder status in the major leagues.

Another name to keep an eye on is pitcher Ryan Tucker. He was rushed to the major leagues at age 21 in 2008 and then missed almost all of 2009 due to knee surgery so his progress has been hampered somewhat. With a minor league WHIP of 1.39, he still needs a lot of work on his control before his next shot at the major leagues.

How they rank:

Baseball America: Morrison (2), Tucker (6), Cousins (9)
Keith Law: Morrison (2), Cousins (5), Petersen (6)
John Sickels: Morrison (2), Tucker (5), Cousins (7), Petersen (8)

2010 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers

It always makes me laugh when a magazine or website reveals their list of 2010 fantasy baseball sleepers and it has names like Carlos Gonzalez, or Carlos Quentin or Billy Butler on it. Those my friends are not sleepers. Those are players that someone might expect to have a breakout season or someone that was injured last year and is expected to bounce back.

To me, a sleeper is someone that does not have a lot of value heading into the season, or is in the minor leagues and will be up in the major leagues soon, or somebody that in an AL or NL only format is going to be able to help your team.

With that in mind, as your fantasy baseball draft or auction winds down, here are some names to keep in mind as the best 2010 fantasy baseball sleepers by position.

C – Jason Castro (Astros) – only has Humberto Quintero in front of him and the Astros need all of the offense they can get. Reached Double-A last season and it would be quite jump for him to reach the major leagues. However, holds a .295 career minor league batting average with good plate discipline (77 walks to 108 strikeouts). Struggled in the Arizona Fall League hitting .143 in 42 at bats.

1B – Logan Morrison (Marlins) – like Castro, Morrison played in Double-A last year. Suffered a fracture in his right wrist in 2009 which limited his at bats to 278. Has great plate discipline as he walked 17 more times than he struck out. Power still needs to develop, but with the budget conscious Marlins, he has a chance to open the year at first base. Could put up similar stats to James Loney of 2009.

2B – Chris Getz (Royals) - was traded to Kansas City along with Josh Fields for Mark Teahen in the off season. Royals general manager Dayton Moore has already gone on record saying there could eventually be a trade with the depth they have in the infield which would open a starting role for Getz if that happened. Had 25 stolen bases in 375 at bats in 2009 so he is a good end game option in AL only leagues.

SS – Starlin Castro (Cubs) – this might be a little bit of a stretch but he has been drawing rave reviews in the minor leagues and handled himself well in the Arizona Fall League. With a weak link at second base, there is a slim chance that Castro could open the year at shortstop with Ryan Theriot moving to second base. Has a career .302 batting average with 34 steals in 665 at bats. Received a lot of playing time in the AFL and hit .376 with nine steals in 101 at bats.

3B – Chad Tracy (Cubs) – just another Aramis Ramirez shoulder injury away from getting 500+ at bats. Can also play first base so he should be able to get 250-300 at bats with the Cubs and has a little pop in his bat. Nice end game pick in NL only leagues.

OF- Jim Edmonds (Brewers) – an under the radar signing by the Milwaukee Brewers. Out of baseball last season and will be 40 in June, however he has a few things going for him. One, Carlos Gomez is in front of him and there is no guarantee he hits any better than he did with the Minnesota Twins. Two, if they fall into a platoon, Edmonds as the left-handed batter will get the majority of at bats. Slugged 19 home runs in 250 at bats with the Cubs in 2008.

SP- Felipe Paulino (Astros) - has the chance to grab the 5th starter spot from Brian Moehler. Has a nice strikeout rate but has been too inconsistent in the major leagues. Had a string of four solid starts in September in which he allowed 9 runs in 23 innings with 27 strikeouts, but then was bombed for eight runs in his last start of the month. Is an option in NL only leagues and  worth stashing on reserve for his strikeout upside.

SP – Hector Rondon (Indians) - the Indians rotation is a mess so it’s not like he has a bunch of stud pitchers to pass on the depth chart. Split time last season between Double-A and Triple-A. Has shown good control in the minor leagues with 1.9 walks per nine innings and eight strikeouts per nine. Even if he starts the year in Triple-A for more seasoning, he should not be down there too long. Turns 22 later this week.

RP – Kris Medlen (Braves) – made it to the major leagues before Tommy Hanson did last season. Once he arrived, he struggled as a starter and was then moved to the bullpen. He posted some nice numbers after the All-Star break with a 2.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with more than a strikeout per inning. Only a string of bad starts away by Kenshin Kawakami from moving into the rotation.

Minor League Report – week 10

by Todd Lammi

Second basemen Sean Rodriguez was recalled by the Los Angeles Angels from Triple-A to replace Howie Kendrick who was demoted. Rodriguez was hitting .273 with 21 home runs, 60 RBI and six stolen bases.

First basemen Logan Morrison (Marlins), out since April 10 with a fractured wrist, returned to action this week.

Jake Arrieta (Orioles) was promoted to Triple-A and tossed six innings with one run allowed and six strikeouts. On the season, Arrieta has a 2.49 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Tobi Stoner (Mets) was promoted to Triple-A after going 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA in Double-A. Stoner held hitters to a .170 average while striking out 28 in 47 innings.

The move to second bases is not affecting the offense of Alcides Escobar (Brewers) as he continues to excel at the plate. Escobar has hit .400 over his last 10 games with one home run, six RBI and four stolen bases.

Catcher Jason Castro (Astros) was recently promoted to Double-A after hitting .309 with seven home runs and 44 RI.

Outfielder Jordan Danks (White Sox) could be playing with brother John in the major leagues in 2010. Danks, currently in Double-A is batting .318 with six home runs, 32 RBI and eight steals between two levels.

Zach Stewart (Reds) has been even better since his promotion to Double-A, going 3-0 with a 0.62 ERA in five starts. For the season, Stewart has a 1.51 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings.

Travis Wood (Reds) is currently 6-3 in Double-A with a 1.11 ERA. Wood is holding opposing batters to an .181 average and has struck out 69 in 81 innings.

Third basemen Dayan Viciedo (White Sox) is slowly starting to turn his season around in Double-A. Viciedo is now hitting .277 on the season with four home runs and 37 RBI. After only three walks and 26 strikeouts in 116 at bats in May, Viciedo has three walks and three strikeouts in 45 at bats so far in June.

Fantasy Baseball – Minor League Report

by Todd Lammi

Each week we will take a look at the top happenings in minor league baseball from a fantasy baseball perspective. Here is a recap of some of the top minor league players in action in week one.

David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays made his minor league debut Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings, while limited to a 75 pitch count.

Jordan Zimmermann of the Washington Nationals in his first AAA start gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Tommy Hanson of the Atlanta Braves struck out 10 in 4 1/3 shutout innings on Thursday. Hanson allowed three hits and two walks will throwing 84 pitches.

Neftali Feliz made his AAA debut for the Texas Rangers and overcame some wildness to pitch four shutout innings, allowing four hits and six walks.

Third basemen Brett Wallace (AA) of the St. Louis Cardinals hit two home runs and drove in six runs on Thursday.

Catcher Carlos Santana (AA) of the Cleveland Indians homered and drove in four runs on Thursday.

Seattle Mariners prospect Carlos Triunfel in AA suffered a broken left fibula while sliding into second base on Friday. Preliminary estimates are that he could miss six to eight weeks of action.

Florida Marlins first baseman Logan Morrison (AA) suffered a small fracture at the base of his right thumb and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

For those of you looking at long term minor league keepers, check out the article at Baseball America that talks about two of the top young outfielders in the game in Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves and Mike Stanton of the Florida Marlins.

Baseball America also has their list of where the top 100 prospects are starting out in 2009. You can access the list here. If you live in the San Jose, CA area, be sure to swing by one of the San Jose Giants games. That team boasts several of the top prospects in all of minor league baseball in pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson,  catcher Buster Posey and first basemen Angel Villalona. Also keep an eye on third basemen Conor Gillaspie who saw time in the major leagues last year, and second basemen Nick Noonan.
