2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 23

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 23 (August 29 – September 4)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

The Chicago White Sox called up outfielder Dayan Viciedo to fill in for Carlos Quentin who was placed on the disabled list. Viciedo was hitting .296 in 452 at bats in Triple-A with 20 home runs and 78 RBI. Though Viciedo did not get the start on Saturday, that went instead to Brent Lillibridge, Viciedo should see the majority of playing time while Quentin is out of action.

Matt Harrison will have his start skipped on Tuesday in order to limit his innings and will return to the rotation on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox so he loses out on his two start status. Scott Feldman will get a spot start in the rotation in place of Harrison against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the disabled list with an injured wrist. Recent waiver claim Dewayne Wise got the start on Saturday in place of Rasmus. AL-only league managers might be able to squeeze a couple of stolen bases out of Wise if you are short in that category.

National League:

The San Francisco Giants called up pitching prospect Eric Surkamp from Double-A and gave him the start Saturday against the Houston Astros. Surkamp acquitted himself nicely, going six innings while allowing one run and striking out four. There is a good chance he sticks around for a few more starts and NL-only keeper league owners should be looking to add him to their roster in preparation for 2012. The Ginats announced Sunday that Surkamp will return to the rotation for a start on September 6th against the San Diego Padres.

With the rainout on Saturday, the Philadelphia Phillies have juggled their rotation for next week. Cole Hamels will get the start on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds followed by Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.

The Giants also placed outfielder Nate Schierholtz on the disabled list with a hairline fracture in his foot. Schierholtz had been out of action since August 21. On Sunday, the team also activated Andres Torres from the disabled and Torres is starting in center field on Sunday against the Houston Astros.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 21

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 21 (August 15 – August 21)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

The Detroit Tigers placed Carlos Guillen on the disabled list with a sore wrist. The team recalled Will Rhymes from the minor leagues, giving some value to Rhymes in AL-only leagues as he should see the majority of starts at second base while Guillen is out of action.

Second basemen Alexi Casilla of the Minnesota Twins didn’t even make it through a full game coming off of the disabled list as he injured his hamstring again while trying to beat out an infield hit.

The Seattle Mariners placed first basemen Justin Smoak on the disabled list with a broken nose. The team called up Wily Mo Pena to take his place on the roster.

National League:

San Francisco Giants outfielder Carlos Beltran is not playing again on Sunday making it the sixth game in a row he has now missed. With the potential for a trip to the disabled list looming, it is best to look for another option for your outfield for next week. The Giants also placed Andres Torres on the disabled list while calling up Brandon Belt, so Belt may be an option for your lineup with the Giants now short two outfielders.

The Atlanta Braves placed starting pitcher Tommy Hanson on the disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis. Hanson was slated for two starts next week but has now been replaced in the rotation by Randall Delgado, though it will likely be for only one start with Jair Jurrjens coming back from the disabled list. The Braves also activated Brian McCann from the disabled list so he should be active in all formats for your lineup next week.

The Florida Marlins sent outfielder Logan Morrison down to Triple-A in a move that seems more based on his comments on Twitter and in the media than his actual performance. While Morrison had been struggling since the All-Star break with a .200 batting average, he had been one of the few power sources on the team with 17 home runs for the season in 95 games.

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Xavier Nady on the disabled list with a fractured hand and signed Lyle Overbay to take his place on the roster. Overbay is nothing more than roster filler at this point and will not have value unless you are in an extremely deep NL-only league.

First basemen Derrek Lee of the Pittsburgh Pirates will miss two to four weeks of action after suffering a fractured wrist. Garrett Jones will shift over to first base with the Pirates likely going with a platoon in the outfield.

The Chicago Cubs placed Carlos Zambrano on the disqualified list which means he will miss the next 30 days of action and there is a good chance he has pitched his last game of 2011.

To help set your pitching rotation for next week, check out the week 21, two start pitchers. The rainout of the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees game today will push back James Shields and A.J. Burnett making them two start pitchers next week. The same goes for the Phillies and Nationals who had their game postponed on Sunday, making Roy Halladay and Chien-Ming Wang two start pitchers next week.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 20

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 20 (August 8 – August 14)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Lost in the news that the Toronto Blue Jays called up top prospect Brett Lawrie this week was that the Kansas City Royals promoted second basemen Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A. Giavotella was hitting .338 for the Omaha Storm Chasers with nine home runs, 72 RBI and nine stolen bases. If you are looking for middle infield help in the American League, he can help your team next week.

The Tampa Bay Rays placed starting pitcher Alex Cobb on the disabled list and the team will now go back to the more traditional five-man rotation. Jeremy Hellickson and James Shields will both get two starts next week for the Rays with one less man in the rotation.

National League:

Starting pitcher Roy Oswalt of the Philadelphia Phillies returned from the disabled and struggled against the San Francisco Giants, allowing 12 hits and two walks in six innings while striking out four. It was Oswalt’s first start since pitching back on June 23 and he will face the Washington Nationals in his next start.

Jair Jurrjens was placed on the disabled list by the Atlanta Braves and replaced in the rotation by Mike Minor who got the start on Sunday against the Mets. Minor allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. Minor’s next start will come at home against the Chicago Cubs.

Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets is going to miss some time after inuring his knee Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. Ruben Tejada has been recalled to take his place and Muprhy will likely be headed to the disabled list next week. The Mets also suffered another blow in the game as Jose Reyes suffered a pulled left hamstring and could miss time as well next week.

With Carlos Gonzalez activated from the disabled list by the Colorado Rockies, it means Seth Smith is in for a reduction in playing time with the Rockies offense performing well with Eric Young Jr. at the top of the batting order. if Young is still on the waiver wire in your league, he can give your team a big boost in stolen bases.

Outfielder Chris Heisey was placed on the disabled list by the Cincinnati Reds and was replaced on the roster by outfielder Dave Sappelt. Sappelt was hitting .313 with seven home runs and 29 RBI in 297 at bats in AAA.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 14

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 14 (June 26 – July 3)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher John Danks left his start on Saturday after just 1 2/3 innings  with a strained oblique. Watch for updates tonight or tomorrow from the team as there is a good chance he could be headed for the disabled list.

Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was placed on the disabled list with a fractured thumb and will miss at the minimum six weeks of action. The Indians called up Travis Buck from Triple-A to replace Choo on the roster. Buck was hitting .323 over his last 10 games with two home runs and 11 RBI with a stolen base and will share time in the outfield with Austin Kearns.

With top prospect Dustin Ackley now in the major leagues and Adam Kennedy shifted to third base and performing well, Chone Figgins is going to see a reduction in playing time. Figgins is hitting .190 for the season and has stolen eight bases in 14 attempts, including just one stolen base since May 11th. Kennedy meanwhile is hitting .276 for the year with five home runs, 23 RBI and six steals.

Jim Thome was activated from the disabled list by the Minnesota Twins and should see action with home games next week against National League teams. Thome is hitting .237 for the season with four home runs and 12 RBI in 76 at bats.

National League:

Starting pitcher Roy Oswalt of the Philadelphia Phillies was placed on the disabled list this week which gvies Vance Worley value again in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed league formats. Worley tossed six shutout innings last night allowing one hit with four strikeouts and will start next Wednesday against Boston and John Lackey.

Starting pitcher Barry Zito returned from the disabled list for the San Francisco Giants and was replaced on the DL by Jonathan Sanchez. Zito had four rehab starts, working a total of 28 2/3 innings with a .161 batting average against and 25 strikeouts. Zito will start on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs.

Starting pitcher Homer Bailey is expected to return from the disabled list tomorrow and get the start against the Baltimore Orioles. He was not that great in three rehab starts at Triple-A alllowing nine runs in 13 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 10

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 10 (May 30 – June 5)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

The trade of Scott Sizemore by the Detroit Tigers to the Oakland A’s this week was done in hopes of jump starting Ryan Raburn’s bat by moving him to the infield. The deal puts Sizemore in Triple-A for now as the team will work him out at third base since the A’s brass are in love with Mark Ellis’ defense at second. Raburn went 0-for-4 on Sunday with three strikeouts and is now hitting .195 for the season.

Andy Dirks homered for the second time of the week on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox and is worth using in mixed formats if you are short an outfielder for this week, though he will see starts primarily against right-handed pitching. Keep in mind though that once Magglio Ordonez returns from the disabled list, Dirks goes to the bench or to the minor leagues.

Grady Sizemore of the Cleveland Indians has gotten off to a slow start since returning from injury, going 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts, including striking out in all four at bats on Sunday. If you have other options for your lineup, I would consider sitting Sizemore for the week.

David Murphy looks to be the odd man out in the Texas offense with the return of Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz from the disabled list and Julio Borbon close to coming back to action as well.

Andy Oliver is an option if you need a starting pitcher in AL-only leagues while Phil Coke is on the disabled list for the Detroit Tigers. Oliver got the start on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox and went six innings, allowing three runs with three strikeouts. Oliver’s next start will come on the road against the Chicago White Sox.

Frank Francisco has blown saves in back-to-back outings for the Toronto Blue Jays, making him only 5-for-8 in save chances this season. Jon Rauch should see some save chances next week after picking up a save on Friday as could Octavio Dotel.

National League:

I touted Juan Miranda in one of my previous columns now that Russell Branyan is out of the picture in Arizona and Miranda responded with a two home run game on Friday with four RBI. I definitely think he is an option in mixed league formats if you are looking for some power.

Very happy to see Eric Young Jr. back with the Colorado Rockies, not just because he is on one of my NL -only teams but he is the type of leadoff hitter the Colorado Rockies need to give their offense a spark. Since Young had been playing outfield in Triple-A (where he his .363 with 17 steals), he should see full-time action with the Rockies filling in for Seth Smith and Dexter Fowler in the outfield and for Jonathan Herrera at second base. This is of course based on Young hitting and getting on base where he can put his speed to use.

Logan Forsythe looks like he is going to get first crack to replace Orlando Hudson at second base for the San Diego Padres while Hudson is out with injury. Forsythe got the start again on Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a run scored while batting eighth in the order. Forsythe was hitting .270 at Triple-A with five home runs, 21 RBI and three steals when he was recalled.

It doesn’t look like Brandon Belt is going to get much action for the San Francisco Giants as he has started just one of three games since being recalled from Triple-A. The Giants have too many veterans and options in the outfield at this point for Belt to get consistent playing time.

Jordan Lyles replaces Wandy Rodriguez (DL) in the rotation for the Houston Astros and becomes a two start pitcher in week 10. Lyles had a 3.20 ERA in 10 starts in Triple-A with 41 strikeouts in 59 innings and had allowed three runs in his last 20 2/3 innings.

Tom Gorzelanny was placed on the disabled list by the Washington Nationals and replaced in the rotation by Yunesky Maya who got the start on Sunday. Maya lasted 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs on six hits, three walks and no strikeouts. I would stay away from Maya in NL-only formats.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 9

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 9 (May 23- May 29)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Jim Thome and was activated from the disabled list by the Minnesota Twins and should return to his role as designated hitter. The Twins always activated Jason Repko from the disabled list while sending Ben Revere back to the minor leagues. Revere was hitting .207 in 29 at bats with two stolen bases and will likely not be back again until September barring another injury.

Outfielders Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz are expected to come of the disabled list on Monday for the Texas Rangers, which means Craig Gentry will likely be sent down to the minor leagues. Hamilton and Cruz both looked good on Saturday night with Hamilton hitting a line drive home run to right field and Cruz hitting a home run to center field.

Josh Outman was called up by the Oakland A’s and will get the start on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels making him a two start pitcher in week 9. Outman has not been the same pitcher since having Tommy John surgery in 2009 as he has struggled with his control. Outman had a 4.78 ERA in eight starts with 27 walks and 30 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings.

Second basemen Howie Kendrick of the Los Angeles Angels could be headed for the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Kendrick has not played since May 19th when he went 3-for-4 against the Seattle Mariners.

Shortstop Reid Brignac will miss the next four games for the Tampa Bay Rays on bereavement leave paving the way for Elliott Johnson to get some more playing time. He could be a sneaky middle infield place this week if you are short a player at that position.

Second basemen Brian Roberts does not look like he is ready to return from his concussion to the Baltimore Orioles just yet so Robert Andino will continue to fill in for him.

Starting pitcher Alex White of the Cleveland Indians will miss two to three months with a strained ligament in his finger. Mitch Talbot will take his place in the rotation when he comes off the disabled list. Talbot had two rehab starts for a total of nine innings in Triple-A as he works to come back from a strained elbow.

National League:

The Philadelphia Phillies activated Chase Utley from the disabled list so be sure to have him active for the upcoming week. Utley hit .281 while on rehab with a home run, four RBI and a stolen base. The best news was he seemed to have no problems with his knee so he looks good to go for now.

Jason Heyward was finally placed on the disabled list by the Atlanta Braves with a sore shoulder. Joe Mather takes over in right field for Heyward an is an option in NL-only formats if you need at bats for the next two weeks. Mather is hitting .400 in 30 at bats this year with a home run and six RBI.

The Los Angeles Dodgers swapped infielders on the disabled list with Rafael Furcal returning to action and Juan Uribe going on the disabled list with a strained hip flexor. The move will keep Jamey Carroll in the starting lineup for another few weeks. Furcal went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in his return to the lineup on Sunday.

Tim Hudson of the Braves will miss his start on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a sore back with Mike Minor taking his start. Minor had struggled his last two outings in Triple-A allowing seven runs in 13 innings.

The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Marlon Byrd on the disabled list after Byrd suffered facial fractures when he was hit in the head by a pitch on Saturday. Reed Johnson will fill in for Byrd in the outfield. Johnson is hitting .392 in 51 at bats this season with two home runs and 15 RBI.

The release of Russell Branyan earlier in the week by the Arizona Diamondbacks gives Juan Miranda a lot more value making him worth a look in deeper mixed formats. Miranda had four RBI in his previous two games and hit a home run on Sunday.

If you are looking for a second catcher in NL-only or mixed leagues, it looks like Ronny Paulino will be seeing more time behind the dish for the New York Mets with Josh Thole struggling behind the plate. Paulino is hitting .313 in 32 at bats while Thole is batting .205 in 112 at bats.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 8

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 8 (May 16- May 22)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season. Keep in mind that interleague play starts at the end of the week so there are some players who normally see time at designated hitter that will not get time when their team travels to National League parks, such as Hideki Matsui of the Oakland A’s.

With three games rained out Sunday, most of the pitchers that were expected to start today will instead become two start pitchers in week 8 as most teams shift their rotation’s back one day.

American League:

There is a good chance that the Chicago White Sox might be promoting outfielder Dayan Viciedo next week with Mark Teahen struggling with an oblique injury. Teahen is supposed to test it out before Monday’s game and could then be placed on the disabled list depending on how he does.

Outfielder Julio Borbon was placed on the disabled list by the Texas Rangers with a hamstring injury and will be of action for several weeks. The team recalled Endy Chavez from Triple-A who should starts against right-handed pitching with Craig Gentry seeing time against southpaws.

National League:

Starting pitcher Brandon Beachy will miss close to a month of action for the Atlanta Braves with an oblique injury. It looks like Julio Teheran will step into Beachy’s place in the rotation as Mike Minor made his start today in Triple-A for the Gwinnett Braves, going five innings while allowing eight hits and three runs with three strikeouts.

Mike Leake was sent to the minor leagues by the Cincinnati Reds with the return of Homer Bailey to the rotation after Leake failed to impress in the bullpen. The move to Triple-A will keep Leake stretched out as a starter in case an injury strikes the Reds rotation.

Ian Stewart was sent back to the minor leagues by the Colorado Rockies after struggling once again as Ty Wigginton is now locked in at third base and becomes an option in deeper mixed leagues. Stewart likely needs a change of scenery to get a shot in the major leagues again.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 7

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 7 (May 9- May 15)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Outfielder Nelson Cruz hit the disabled list for the Texas Rangers with a strained quad. The transaction means Mike Napoli and Chris Davis could see additional at bats at first base with Mitch Moreland moving to the outfield and recent callup Craig Gentry seeing a spot start or two in the outfield as well.

The Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Marco Scutaro on the disabled list and called up prospect Jose Iglesias. With Jed Lowrie locked in as the starter, Iglesias won’t see much action except maybe as a defensive replacement late in games.

National League:

With center fielder Rick Ankiel on the disabled list for the Washington Nationals, Roger Bernadina should see the majority of at bats against right-handed pitchers. Bernadina was hitting .270 at the time of his promotion in Triple-A with a home run, two RBI and eight stolen bases.

Outfielder Andres Torres is expected to come off the disabled list for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Torres has collected two hits in 11 at bats while on his rehab assignment in Triple-A.

Outfielder Jason Bourgeois was placed on the disabled list by the Houston Astros with a strained oblique and will be out of action for several weeks.

Joe Blanton will come off the disabled list for the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday so he will be a two start pitcher in week 7. I am more hesitant to start pitchers coming off the disabled list with injuries related to their arm or elbow so I would keep him benched for a week or two if you have better options.

Johnny Cueto made his season debut for the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday and it was a good one as he tossed six shutout innings, allowing five hits, a walk and picking up four strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs. His next start will come against the St. Louis Cardinals so he should be active in all formats next week.

Starting pitcher Chris Young was placed on the disabled list by the New York Mets with shoulder tightness. Dillon Gee will take Young’s spot in the rotation and get the start next Friday at Houston. Gee should be active in NL-only formats.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 5

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 5 (April 25 – May 1)  of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Darren Oliver is the new closer in Texas with Neftali Feliz headed to the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder . Oliver snared his first save of the season on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals and has a 1.93 ERA with a .54 WHIP through 9 1/3 innings in 2011.

Carlos Carrasco of the Cleveland Indians left his start early on Sunday against the Minnestoa Twins with elbow tightness. It is best to reserve him for now until more information becomes available on the seriousness of the issue.

Jesse Litsch is headed back to the major leagues for the Toronto Blue Jays and will get the start in place of Brett Cecil who was demoted to Triple-A. Litsch will have a tough start Tuesday at Texas against Matt Harrison.

Second basemen Aaron Hill is headed to the disabled list with hamstring issues for the Blue Jays and will miss the next two weeks of action. Mike McCoy and John McDonald should see additional at bats in Hill’s absence.

National League:

Ryan Madson has taken over as the closer in Philadelphia after Jose Contreras was placed on the disabled Sunday. Madson picked up saves on Friday and Saturday and has a 1.00 ERA with a .89 WHIP for the season.

Third basemen Scott Rolen of the Cincinnati Reds was placed on the disabled list with a strained shoulder. Miguel Cairo will step in at the hot corner in his place and see the majority of at bats. Cairo is hitting .286 on the season with a home run and seven RBI.

Willie Bloomquist has missed the last three games for the Arizona Diamondbacks with a hamstring injury and is considered day-to-day. If you have other options for your fantasy baseball lineup, I would look to start someone in place of him next week.

Florida Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison was placed on the disabled list earlier in the week and will miss 2-4 weeks. Emilio Bonifacio and Scott Cousins will see more at bats in the outfield while Morrison is out.

Two Start Pitchers:

A couple of updates for starting rotations for next week. Bronson Arroyo has been pushed up to Monday by the Cincinnati Reds making him a two-start pitcher in week 5 and knocking Sam LeCure down to one start. Jordan Zimmermann will get the start on Tuesday for the Washington Nationals which gives him two starts for the week as well. Chris Young returns from the disabled list for the New York Mets and will start on Tuesday, giving him two starts for the week. His return bumps R.A. Dickey back a day which means he will only get one start now.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 4

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 4 of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Grady Sizemore returned to the lineup for the Cleveland Indians in center field and hitting leadoff and went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. He should be activated for your lineup next week in all types of fantasy baseball league formats.

Matt Capps is the new closer in Minnesota after Joe Nathan blew saves on Thursday and Saturday. Capps picked up the saved today against the Tampa Bay Rays working a scoreless ninth inning on eight pitches. Nathan should be reserved in mixed formats until he gets back in mix for saves.

Mitch Talbot who was scheduled for two starts in week 4 was placed on the disabled list by the Cleveland Indians. His spot will be taken by Triple-A pitcher Jeanmar Gomez who was scheduled to start on Tuesday, but I would not recommend on using him in your pitching rotation.

Jed Lowrie was in the lineup for a second straight day for the Boston Red Sox and went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. He should start to see some more playing time with team struggling and Marco Scutaro off to a slow start at the plate.

Oakland A’s starting pitcher Dallas Braden left Saturday’s start against the Detroit Tigers with a stiff shoulder and his start is in question for week 4. I would leave him benched if you have other alternatives with no updates as to what his status will be.

National League:

St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin blew his fourth save of the season on Sunday, surrendering a game-winning home run to Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers. If you own Franklin, I would him for now and hope that you have Mitchell Boggs on reserve who looks like could be next in line for saves in the bullpen.

With pitcher Chris Young going on the disabled list for the New York Mets earlier in the week, Dillon Gee got the start today and will have another start next week if you need someone to start for your team in a NL-only format. Gee worked 5 2/3 innings allowing one run with four strikeouts.

There is a chance that Mets outfielder Jason Bay could be back in the lineup on Tuesday which would send Willie Harris back to the bench. If you are short a hitter in your NL only league, you might want to consider activating Bay. In mixed league formats, I would leave him reserved for another week until he plays a few games.

Pitcher Roy Oswalt of the Philadelphia Phillies is still expected to make his start next week on Thursday against the San Diego Padres after leaving Friday’s start against the Florida Marlins after six innings with a strained back.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 3

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 3 of the 2011 fantasy baseball season.

American League:

Manager Ozzie Guillen of the Chicago White Sox changed his mind as he is prone to do and has announced that the team will go with the dreaded closer by committee in the bullpen for now. That means that guys like Matt Thornton, Chris Sale, Jesse Crain and Sergio Santos all could be in the mix to see save chances in week 3.

Dan Haren’s relief outing on Saturday night for the Los Angeles Angels knocks him out as a two start pitcher in week 3 as his scheduled start will now likely be pushed back to Tuesday or later. Despite his small amount of pitches thrown last night, hopefully it doesn’t come to bite him like it did Aaron Harang several years ago.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy of the Baltimore Orioles could miss up to six weeks of action with a strained oblique. Light hitting Cesar Izturis will take over and is a lineup option only in the deepest of AL only leagues.

Haren’s teammate, Erick Aybar was put on the disabled list and will be out of action for the next week meaning extra more at bats for Maicer Izturis and Alberto Callaspo.

Adam Kennedy has been seeing extra time at second base for the Seattle mariners since Jack Wilson committed two errors on Wednesday. Manager Eric Wedge has not said when Wilson will be back in the lineup as he was out of the lineup again on Sunday.

David Bush will get a one-time start for the Texas Rangers against the Detroit Tigers after team played a double header on Saturday leaving them short a starting pitcher for next week.

National League:

Aaron Rowand is going to have some value for the next week or so in San Francisco with Andres Torres out of action with a strained Achilles. He is someone to throw in your lineup in NL only leagues if you are in need of at bats

Todd Helton has been out of action with back problems and it is still unsure when he will return to the lineup. Jason Giambi and Ty Wigginton should see extra playing time in week 3 until Helton is ready to return to action.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 26

With the final week of the season now upon us, here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 26.

American League:

Those owners in the American League looking foe a starting pitching could go with Tony Pena of the Chicago White Sox that will draw the Cleveland Indians in his start next week with pitcher Gavin Floyd shut down for the remainder of the season.

Cliff Lee lost his two-start status for next week when the Texas Rangers decided to bump him from Tuesday to Thursday to set their rotation for the playoffs. Scott Feldman will take his start on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners.

Jose Valverde returned to action for the Detroit Tigers after missing time with an injury to his elbow. If you are in need of saves for the last week of the season, get him back in your line up.

Catcher Joe Mauer is expected to return to action for the Minnesota Twins at the start of the week after missing weekend action with a sore knee.

Brandon League may be able to snag a save or two next week for Seattle with closer David Aardsma day-to-day with a strained oblique.

National League:

It looks like Jimmy Rollins will see most of the starts at shortstop in Philadelphia after missing the previous two weeks with a hamstring injury. With the Phillies getting ready for the playoffs, Rollins needs to get his at bats in to be ready.

Shortstop Orlando Cabrera is day-to-day after leaving Sunday’s game with an injury to his left side. After missing action in August with a strained oblique, and the Cincinnati Reds heading for the playoffs, Paul Janish could see most of the starts next week.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 25

With only two weeks left in the fantasy baseball season it becomes critical to have players that are healthy and getting at bats in your lineup. With several pennant races close to decided, there could be some players missing time over the next two weeks that could impact your standings. Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 25.

American League:

Going Up:

Scott Baker, out the last two weeks with tendinitis, is slated to start on Tuesday for the Minnesota Twins vs. the Cleveland Indians as the team moves to a six-man rotation over the next two weeks. This makes Brian Duensing now a one-start pitcher instead of two in week 25.

Out for two months, Andy Pettitte returned to action for the New York Yankees on Sunday, allowing one run in six innings against the Baltimore Orioles. He should be active in your lineup the next two weeks.

Going Down:

Joe Mauer exited Sunday’s game early with pain in his knee which has been an ongoing problem of late. With the Minnesota Twins holding a comfortable lead in the standings, there is a good chance Mauer could miss several games next week.

Coco Crisp is out after breaking his pinkie on Saturday on a slide. He is scheduled to see a hand specialist in the early part of the week which means you need to find a replacement for him next week.

Jason Kubel missed the latter part of this week with a sore wrist and sat against on Sunday, leaving his playing time in doubt for next week. With the Twins holding a nice lead in the AL Central, there is no need to rush him back to action.

National League:

Going Down:

Tylyer Colvin is done for the remainder of the season for Chicago Cubs after part of a broken bat got stuck in his chest on Sunday. The Cubs also lost Geovany Soto as he will undergo surgery on his shoulder Monday putting him out for the rest of the year as well.

Homer Bailey is questionable for his start on Monday for the Cincinnati Reds after he left his last start with dizziness. It looks like a final decision will not be made until Monday when manager Dusty Baker checks with the trainers. It could possibly put his two-start status in jeopardy so if you league allows transactions on Monday before the first game is played, be sure to check for updates on Bailey before putting him in your lineup.

Michael Bourn left Houston’s game early on Sunday with a strained oblique muscle and will likely miss a few days next week. If you have another outfielder option on your team, you might want to start him unless you are absolutely desperate for stolen bases since Bourn could miss half the week or more in week 25.

Two of the top shortstops, Hanley Ramirez and Jimmy Rollins continue to miss time and could be out for some of next week as well. Unless you play in an extremely shallow league, there are likely no real could options to play so you might have to ride them out, but if you do have a decent alternative on your bench, I would get them active. Ramirez has a better chance to see time than Rollins who has been out since September 8th with a strained hamstring.

Garrett Jones of the Pittsburgh Pirates missed games over the weekend with a hurt shoulder and is likely out the first few games to start week 25 as well.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 23

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 23.

American League:

Alex Rodriguez returned to the New York Yankees lineup on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. He should be active in all formats for next week.

Cliff Lee has been scratched from his Tuesday start for the Texas Rangers and could possibly be skipped the entire week depending on how his back feels. Scott Feldman will take the hill on Tuesday at Toronto. Also for the Rangers, shortstop Elvis Andrus is likely to miss the first part of next week with hamstring issues. Cristian Guzman will get starts in his place.

Josh Hamilton is expected to miss a week of action for the Texas Rangers with sore ribs. The team will go with a platoon of Julio Borbon and Jeff Francoeur in his place.

National League:

Johan Santana has been scratched from his Tuesday start by the New York Mets; instead the team will turn to Dillon Gee from Triple-A.  Gee had a 4.96 ERA with 165 strikeouts in 161 1/3 innings, with opposing hitters batting .275 against him.

Clay Hensley has supplanted Leo Nunez as closer in Florida for the time being so if you are looking for saves next week, get Hensley in your active line up.

Platoon Roles:

For those players in platoon roles, below you will find the number of games that each player might play based on the current pitching matchups for week 23.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 21

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 21.

American League:

Francisco Liriano lost his status as a two start pitcher in week 21 when the Minnesota Twins decided to push him back to Thursday and instead moved up Nick Blackburn to start on Monday. Liriano will instead face Cliff Lee and Texas on Thursday.

Oakland A’s closer Andrew Bailey came off of the disabled list on Sunday and worked a scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He should immediately go back into the closer role so he should be active in all formats next week.

If you are looking for batting average in the infield in AL only leagues, Will Rhymes has been doing a good job filling in for the injured Carlos Guillen at second base in Detroit.Rhymes is hitting .310 on the season and has multi-hit games in four of his last five starts.

Bill Hall and Jed Lowrie will see additional at bats going forward in Boston with Dustin Pedroia going back on the disabled list. Hall has homered four times in his last 10 games and Lowrie is hitting .302 on the season.

With Lance Berkman going on the disabled list in New York, Austin Kearns should see additional at bats the next week or two.

Infielder Macier Izturis is headed to the disabled list for the third time this season for the Los Angeles Angels with pain in his shoulder.

National League:

Geovany Soto was supposed to be activated from the disabled list by the Chicago Cubs today, but was instead held back another day. Check the news early Monday for an update as it would reduce the number of at bats for his fill in Koyie Hill.

Eric Young looks to be the man at second base in Colorado and should see the majority of playing time over Clint Barmes. The release of Brad Hawpe earlier in the week should give some extra at bats to Dexter Fowler, Seth Smith and Ryan Spillborghs.

The decision by the Florida Marlins to release outfielder Cody Ross means that Cameron Maybin is headed back to the major leagues and should be a full-time player the last six weeks of the season. Maybin was hitting .300 over his last 10 games with two home runs, six RBI and a stolen base. He was 24-for-29 on stolen bases for the season in Triple-A.

The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up catcher Rod Barajas this week and he could see some playing time over Brad Ausmus at catcher going forward. If you are in a deep NL only league and in need of some power, he is a player to take a look at.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 14

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 14.

American League:

The injury to Shin-Soo Choo in Cleveland opens up a spot in the outfield for Michael Brantley who was recalled from Triple-A over the weekend and should see the majority of time going forward in place of Choo.

Felix Doubront was recalled by the Boston Red Sox to replace the injured Clay Buchholz and will get the start Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. It is likely just another spot start for Doubront with a short week after week 14.

Coco Crisp left the game early on Sunday for the Oakland A’s with a tight hamstring. Given how injury prone he is, he is really day-to-day almost every day of the week.

Juan Rivera missed his fifth straight game for the Los Angeles Angels and will likely be out several more games next week. The team called up veteran Paul McAnulty from Triple-A and gave him the start at designated hitter on Sunday.

National League:

Yovani Gallardo of the Milwaukee Brewers is in danger of missing his start next weekend against Pittsburgh after leaving his start Sunday in the third inning with a strained muscle in his side. There will not be an update on his condition until some time on Monday.

Shortstop Jose Reyes is expected to return to the New York Mets line up on Tuesday, but because he is still having trouble swinging left-handed, he might be a platoon type player for next week and only hit against left-handed starters.

Recent call up John Jay and Nick Stavinoha figure to see extended playing time in the outfield for St. Louis with Ryan Ludwick being placed on the disabled list. Jay got the start on Sunday and went 1-for-3 with a home run.

Aaron Cunningham should see some additional starts in the outfield for San Diego in place of Will Venable who was placed on the disabled list. Cunningham got the start in right field on Sunday and went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 12

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 12.

American League:

The Toronto Blue Jays sent down Edwin Encarnacion to Triple-A, which pushes recent call up Jarrett Hoffpauir or DeWayne Wise into the starting line up. It is interesting the Blue Jays were quick to demote Encarnacion, but they left Lyle Overbay in the majors all season when he was struggling and hitting under .200 for a good portion of the year. Hoffpauir was hitting .328 in Triple-A with nine home runs and 43 RBI in 235 at bats with three stolen bases.

Nelson Cruz is expected to come off the disabled list on Tuesday for the Texas Rangers and resume his starting spot in the outfield which will push David Murphy back to the bench.

Detroit starting pitcher Rick Porcello was sent to Triple-A and the Tigers will hope a short stint in the minor leagues will help him like it seems to have for Max Scherzer.

Shortstop Erick Aybar of the Los Angeles Angels will be re-examined on Tuesday and could still be facing a trip to the disabled list. With him out, Kevin Frandsen and Brandon Wood will see additional at bats in week 12.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to return from the disabled list and get the start on Thursday against Colorado.

National League:

Humberto Quintero of the Houston Astros left Sunday’s game after being hit in the head when catching and could be out of action next week. Rookie Jason Castro was called up from Triple-A and could see some starts next week.

The Astros also called up third basemen Chris Johnson from Triple-A where he was hitting .329 with eight home runs and 33 RBI in 149 at bats. His promotion poses a threat to playing time for Pedro Feliz who is hitting only .221 on the season.

Colorado closer Huston Street could be back from the disabled list on Tuesday, but he will likely serve only as a set up man to Manny Corpas initially so there is no rush to get him active in your line up. Street has a 10.29 ERA on rehab in Triple-A with 11 hits and eight runs allowed in seven innings.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will likely use Charlie Haeger or Claudio Vargas to fill in the rotation next week in place of Carlos Monasterios who was placed on the disabled list.

American League:

Rich Harden of the Texas Rangers is headed to the disabled list and will be out of action for the next two weeks as will Dice-K of the Boston Red Sox with a forearm strain. Magglio Ordonez could find himself going on the DL soon after missing action this week with an oblique injury. Orlando Hudson is expected to come of the disabled list and be in the Minnesota Twins lineup on Tuesday after missing time with a sore hand.

Daniel Nava became the latest new Boston Red Sox outfielder this week, starting in right field and batting ninth in the order. It is quite a rise for Nava who was just playing in an Independent League back in 2007. His career minor league batting average is .342 so he can definitely swing the bat so he could see some time if he is over to carry that over against major league pitching.

National League:

Joe Martinez will get the start on Tuesday for the San Francisco Giants, against Baltimore filling in for Todd Wellemyer on the disabled list. Martinez was 5-2 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in 67 1/3 innings with 52 strikeouts. in Triple-A.

Jon Garland becomes a two-start pitcher in week 11 after the San Diego Padres decided to bump him up in the rotation and have him go on three days rest. He will face Toronto and Shaun Marcum and then Chris Tillman and Baltimore at the end of the week.

Catcher Miguel Montero was activate from the disabled list by the Arizona Diamondbacks and is safe to activate for your fantasy baseball lineup next week. Montero went 2-for-4 on Sunday hitting sixth in the line up with a run scored and a RBI.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 10

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 10.

American League:

The Detroit Tigers called up Danny Worth and sent down Adam Everett, so if you still have Worth reserved in an AL only format from earlier in the year, he should see time over Ramon Santiago at shortstop next week. Worth was hitting .287 in Triple-A with two home runs, 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

Orlando Hudson, out of action since May 30th is expected to go on the disabled list sometime in the next few days. Also at risk to go on the disabled list is shortstop J.J. Hardy who was out of action just a short time ago and is still experiencing pain in his wrist. It was not a pretty sight to see the Minnesota infield on Sunday with a combination of Brendan Harris at first base, Matt Tolbert at second base, Nick Punto at shortstop and Danny Valencia at third base, with all four hitters batting under .225.

Doug Fister is headed to the disabled list for the Seattle Mariners and will be replaced in the rotation by either recently recalled Luke French or by Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Minor league pitcher Jake Arrieta was scratched from his start on Saturday and could be headed to the major leagues in either a starter or relief role. If your league allows for daily transactions, I would watch the news on him closely this week as he could have in impact if he gets some starts. I wrote more about him in the minor league report earlier this week.

With Macier Izturis hobbled by a sore knee, Kevin Frandsen could see some additional at bats at third base this week for the Los Angeles Angels. Frandsen is hitting .452 in 31 at bats in a limited role so far in 2010.

National League:

The big news in the National League is the arrival of two rookies on Tuesday with Stephen Strasburg arriving for the Washington Nationals and Mike Stanton coming up for the Florida Marlins. Strasburg is a two-start starter in week 10 which makes him obviously a player to activate. Stanton should move right into the starting line up and hit seventh. Stanton is still a major risk to your fantasy baseball team’s batting average with his high strikeout rate, but if your team needs home runs and RBI, then I would have him active for this week.

Third basemen David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals is likely out of action until next weekend in order to rest his ankle. He did get one at bat on Sunday in a pinch-hit appearance and could fill that role for half of next week.

Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves is expected to miss the first game or two and possibly more next week as he continues to battle an injured finger which means Omar Infante will see additional time in week 10.

2010 Lineup Planner – Week 8

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around the diamond to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 8.

American League:

The return of Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron in Boston means that Darnell McDonald goes back to being a bench player or possibly sent back to Triple-A so make sure he is not in your starting lineup in week 8. Same goes for Jeremy Hermida and Bill Hall. Who would have guessed we would see Bill Hall get 20 at bats in a week in 2010?

Since Edwin Encarnacion returned from the disabled list this week, he has hit five home runs with nine RBI in five games. Needless to say it is safe to get him active for week 8. The return of Encarnacion pushes Jose Bautista back to the outfield which means Toronto will have a glut of outfielders when Travis Snider returns from the disabled list next week.

The rise of David Ortiz from the ashes has pushed Mike Lowell back into a reserve role in Boston. Lowell only gets starts against left-handed pitching and with no southpaws on the Red Sox schedule this week, he will likely sit for the majority of the games.

Jason Donald and Trevor Crowe have both moved into the starting lineup in Cleveland due to injuries and are players to start in American League only formats if you are in need of stolen bases.

The combination of Jack Cust coming up from the disabled list and Coco Crisp returning from the disabled list means Eric Patterson will return to the bench. Crisp should be active for AL leagues and possibly mixed leagues if you are desperate for stolen bases.

Michael Saunders had one week of nice stats for the Seattle Mariners and then immediately returned to the bench upon the return of Milton Bradley. Mike Sweeney has quietly taken over for Ken Griffey Jr. as the designated hitter and immediately added a jolt to the Seattle lineup with five home runs and 11 RBI in his last seven games.

Hank Blalock was a hot pickup in free agent pools last week, but the fact remains with all of the options that Tampa Bay has to pick through for their daily lineup, Blalock will sit against left-handed pitching, meaning he likely misses two games in week 8.

National League:

Seth Smith has taken over in the starting outfield in Colorado in place of Dexter Fowler and becomes a nice play for the rest of the season for his batting average and power upside as he gets the majority of starts. He is tough to start in shallow mixed leagues because Fowler will still get starts, bu if you are in a deep mixed league format, it should be okay to roll with him in the starting lineup.

Shortstop Rafael Furcal is expected to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup by the weekend from the disabled list. If you have been using Jamey Carroll in NL only leagues, be aware he might only see at bats for the first half of the week in week 8.

Reed Johnson is a sneaky play in week for the Dodgers with a chance to possibly start four games against left-handed pitching with Andre Ethier out of the lineup. Johnson is hitting .333 against southpaws this season.

NL only leagues looking for outfield help could find some value in San Diego with Kyle Blanks and Scott Hairston both on the disabled list. Tony Gwynn, Oscar Salazar and Chris Denorfia are three players rotating in two spots with Will Venable being the only full-time player for now.
