2010 Fantasy Baseball ADP – Rising / Falling

With spring training here and new information coming out every day on players, let’s take a look at the 2010 fantasy baseball average draft position (ADP) to see which players are moving up or down on the draft board.

Rising:

Roy Halladay (27th overall) – ADP was 34 two weeks ago and I have seen him going as high as the late teens in recent drafts. With pitching going early this season, Halladay is getting bumped up closer to Tim Lincecum. If there is any pitcher that is going to get 20 or more wins this season, Halladay would be the favorite at this point.

Justin Morneau (39) – ADP is up five spots but he has been going higher as well in recent mock drafts. Concerns about his back and a potential for less power have seem to have been erased from fantasy owners minds.

Josh Johnson (72) – ADP is up 10 spots from two weeks ago. Looks like owners at the end of the fifth round are afraid he will not make it back on the turn in snake drafts and are pulling the trigger a little bit sooner to ensure they get him.

Clayton Kershaw (98) – ADP up 15 spots. Being pulled higher by the early drafting of the Tier 1 pitchers. Arguably the last solid number one starter for your fantasy baseball team depending how much faith you have in Cole Hamels or Ubaldo Jimenez going after him.

Matt Wieters (99) – ADP up 9 spots and he is coming close to falling into the overrated category if he goes any higher. I don’t see his upside that much greater than Miguel Montero or Jorge Posada whom you can get four rounds later in the draft.

Huston Street (143) – ADP up 18 spots as he is last closer going off the board before the remaining relief pitchers who all have question marks tied to them.

Brett Anderson (166) – ADP up 25 spots as people are buying into the hype being spouted by magazines and other websites calling him the breakout pitcher of 2010. No longer has the potential to value for you based on where he is currently going in drafts.

James Loney (184) ADP up 20 spots that has pushed him up the first base rankings ahead of Adam LaRoche, Todd Helton and Paul Konerko. Combination of batting average plus I think people are hoping for an increase in power which I don’t see happening.

Falling:

Alfonso Soriano (77) – ADP down five spots and there is a chance he goes later than this. There is lots of good talent still on the board at the start of the sixth round. His recent comments about his knee that he had surgery on being only 80-85% healthy has to cause some concern if you are planning to draft him.

Michael Bourn (79) – ADP is down 12 spots from two weeks ago. Nice to see that people are starting to realize his true value and are pushing him back to a more reasonable position in that draft, although the 79th spot is still much too high.

Vladimir Guerrero (138) – ADP down 16 spots. Still might have another good season in him, but it is hard to tie up your utility spot this early in the draft since he does not qualify at any other position.

Chris Davis (158) – ADP down 13 spots as people are still trying to decide which version of him are they going to get. It looks like right now owners are not buying into his performance after he came back from Triple-A at the end of the 2009 season.

Jack Cust (232) – ADP down 77 spots thanks to crowded Oakland A’s roster that will limit Cust’s at bats in 2010. Low batting average is also tough to take this late in the draft unless you planned on taking him and surrounded him with high average hitters.

The Daily Dirt for Sunday

by Todd Lammi

It was a good day for the New York Yankees offense on Sunday, as it scored nine runs off of Johan Santana in three innings en route to a 15-0 victory over the New York Mets. The Yankees scored 15 runs without receiving a RBI from Mark Teixeira or Alex Rodriguez. Robinson Cano went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including his 11th home run of the season. Hideki Matsui hit his 1oth home run of the year and Derek Jeter went 4-for-4 to raise his batting average to .310. In other fantasy baseball news around the diamond on Sunday…

Hitters:

B.J. Upton is not delivering at the plate, but at least he is stealing bases in bunches to provide help in one fantasy baseball category. Upton stole two bases again on Sunday giving him three consecutive games with two steals.

Ty Wigginton went 3-for-4 and clubbed two home runs, giving him five on the season.  Wigginton isn’t much of an option in fantasy baseball leagues with his reduced playing time. Since May 26th, Wigginton has started only six out of the last 17 games.

There must be some kind of curse on National League East third basemen this year that have stripped them of their power and turned them into high batting average hitters. Much like David Wright and Andy LaRoche, Pedro Feliz has followed suit in 2009, reducing his home runs and jacking up his batting average. Feliz went 3-for-5 on Sunday with two RBI and is now hitting .318 on the season.

Casey McGehee went 3-for-4 and hit his first home run of the season. He is definitely an option in National League only leagues with Rickie Weeks out for the season. McGehee has raised his batting average 82 points in the last 10 days to its current level of .338.

Corey Hart hit two solo home runs giving him eight on the season, in what has been a disappointing year so far. All he needs is the correct slot in the batting order for him to turn his season around. Batting first or seventh, Hart is hitting only .170 this year in 65 at bats. Compare that to the second or sixth spots in the line up and Hart is batting .290. Memo to Ken Macha, please adjust your batting line up accordingly!

Juan Rivera went 2-for-4 and belted two solo home runs. Rivera has hit three home runs and driven in nine runs in his last seven games.

Miguel Olivo continued his week 10 power surge, going 2-for-4 and hitting his ninth home run of the season. The home run was the fourth this week for Olivo who knocked in eight runs in six games.

Casey Blake went 2-for-4 with four RBI and collected his 10th home run of the season. The home run ended an almost month long drought for Blake who last homered on May 19th.

Ronny Paulino went 4-for-5 and delivered two home runs while driving in three. Paulino has gotten off to a good start in June, as he is now hitting .379 for the month.

Pitchers:

Jered Weaver tossed a complete game shutout with five strikeouts to improve to 7-2 on the year. Weaver has allowed two runs or less in his last five starts while going 4-0 in that stretch.

Matt Cain tossed a complete game, allowing one run with a season-high nine strikeouts.  Cain, who has battled control problems in several starts this season,  did not walk a batter for the third time this year.

A.J. Burnett tossed seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to pick up win number five on the year. Burnett’s inconsistencies have been a direct result of his increase in walks and lack of control compared to previous seasons. His strikeout to walk ratio of 1.78 is currently the lowest it has been since 2003 and his batting average against of .261 is the highest since 2006.

Josh Johnson picked up a complete game victory, allowing three runs with six strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season. Johnson has been amazingly consistent this season. Outside of his start on April 18th, he has allowed three runs or fewer in every other start this year.

Chad Billingsley allowed two runs in seven innings with three strikeouts to up his mark to 9-3. It was the third consecutive win for Billingsley who moved into a tie for first place in wins in the National League with Matt Cain.

Brian Bannister hurled eight scoreless innings and fanned four to gain his fifth victory of the season. Bannister has allowed two earned runs in his last 13 innings.

Scott Baker allowed two runs in seven innings with five strikeouts in a no decision. Baker now has a 2.87 ERA in his last three starts with 23 strikeouts in 22 innings.

Jason Hammel allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the year. Hammel has reeled off three straight wins with a 2.46 ERA in those outings.

Ross Ohlendorf allowed one run in six innings with two strikeouts to pick up his sixth win of the season. The win for Ohlendorf was his first since May 13th.

Closers:

Trevor Hoffman allowed a run for the first time this season, taking the loss against the Chicago White Sox. Hoffman had worked 18 scoreless innings coming into Sunday’s game.

Jose Valverde returned from the disabled list and worked a scoreless inning with three strikeouts.

Frank Francisco was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. C.J. Wilson will take over as closer while Francisco is out.

Fantasy Baseball – the Daily Dirt for Friday

by Todd Lammi

Fours and threes were wild in the National League on Friday night as three games ended in that exact score. Unfortunately for the Florida Marlins, closer Matt Lindstrom was wild as well, allowing four hits, three walks and seven runs in the ninth inning, in their 7-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Shane Victorino hit a two-out grand slam to give the Phillies the lead in the ninth inning and Chase Utley tacked on an insurance run with his fifth home run of the year. The loss cost Marlins starter Josh Johnson a win. Johnson tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out eight Phillies. Dan Uggla hit his third home run of the year for the Fish. In other fantasy baseball news around the diamond on Friday…

National League:

Adam Wainwright allowed one earned run in seven innings with six strikeouts, but got a no decision in the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Ryan Franklin picked up his fifth save of the season. Albert Pujols stole his third base of the year. Ryan Dempster allowed three runs in six innings with six strikeouts for the Cubs…..Javier Vazquez allowed one run in six innings with nine strikeouts to get his second win of the season in the Atlanta Braves 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Jeff Francoeur hit his second home run of the year. Braves outfielder Garret Anderson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained quadriceps muscle. Brandon Jones was recalled from Triple-A. Edison Volquez had control issues for the Reds, walking seven in five innings and allowing three runs…..Johan Santana struck out 10 in six innings to pick up his third win of the year for the New York Mets in a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Jesus Flores and Nick Johnson each hit their first home run of the year for the Nationals…..Yvoni Gallardo picked up a complete game 5-2 win at the expense of the Houston Astros. Gallardo struck out seven without walking a batter. Rickie Weeks hit his third home run of the year for Milwaukee. Carlos Lee hit home run number four for the Astros…..Tim Lincecum looks back on track after striking out 12 in eight innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bengie Molina hit his third home run of the season and Edgar Renteria hit his second for the Giants.

American League:

Zack Greinke is making it look way too easy this season for the Kansas City Royals. Greinke ran his scoreless innings streak to 29 with a complete game 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Greinke struck out 10 while allowing only three hits. Mark Teahen hit his second home run of the year for the Royals. Closer Joakim Soria will be shutdown over the weekend with a sore shoulder. Juan Cruz could see a save opportunity or two while Soria is out….. Nick Blackburn allowed one run in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season in the Minnesota Twins 5-1 win over the Cleveland Indians. Justin Mourneau hit his fourth home run of the year for the Twins…..Michael Young hit a two-run home run in the top of the nith inning to lift the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Hank Blalock added his fourth home run of the season for the Rangers. Brian Roberts hit his first home run of the year for the Orioles…..The Toronto Blue Jays knocked out 21 hits en route to a 14-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Aaron Hill drove in three runs and Vernon Wells added two RBI. Brian Tallet hurled 5 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win…..Kevin Youkilis hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees. Jason Bay hit his fourth home run and Jacob Ellsbury stole his 7th base of the year for Boston. Injured shortstop Julio Lugo is expected to jon the Red Sox next week assuming his games in Triple-A go well over the weekend. The Yankees placed Chien-Ming Wang on the disabled list. Look for Phil Hughes who I wrote about earlier this week to possibly be recalled to start in Wang’s place next week…..Scott Kazmir threw six shutout innings for the Tampa Bay Rays in their win over the Oakland A’s. Carlos Pena hit two home runs and drove in four runs.

Fantasy Baseball – The Daily Dirt for Sunday

by Todd Lammi

The marquee matchup in the National League lived up to its billing on Sunday. Josh Johnson out dueled John Santana as the Florida Marlins beat the New York Mets 2-1. Johnson struck out seven in nine innings. Santana fanned 13 in seven innings, allowing two unearned runs. In other fantasy baseball news of significance, Arizona Diamondbacks starter Brandon Webb was placed on the disabled list after feeling soreness playing catch on Sunday. Now on to the rest of major league baseball from Sunday’s action…

National League:

Three names serve as a reminder early on why it is not worth using a high draft pick on a pitcher in a fantasy baseball league draft. Brandon Webb, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum. Lincecum was not good again on Sunday as allowed 13 runners in 5 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres. On the flip side, Chris Young, who was brutal in spring, tossed seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts for his second win of the year. Nick Hundley went 4 for 4 for the Padres and Chase Headley hit his second home run of the year. Randy Winn stole his third base of the season for the San Francisco Giants…..Aaron Harang looked more like his 2007 self, throwing a nine inning shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates, while striking out nine. Brandon Phillips hit his first home run for the Cincinnati Reds and Willy Taveras stole his first base of the season…..The Washington Nationals fell to 0-6 on the season after an 8-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Rafael Soriano picked up the save for the Braves. Tom Glavine left his minor league start in AA after two innings with shoulder discomfort…..St. Louis Cardinals Kyle Lohse threw a complete game shutout against the Houston Astros. Shortstop Khalil Greene went 3 for 4 for the Cardinals with a stolen base.  It could be a long season for the Astros who are now 1-5. I went to the Round Rock Express game today, Houston’s AAA team, and there is no immediate help on the way…..The Philadelphia Phillis rallied for four runs in the final two innings to defeat the Colorado Rockies 7-5.  Manny Corpas and Huston Street both gave up two run home runs in their innings of work to contribute to the loss. Rookie Dexter Fowler hit his second home run for the Rockies. With Seth Smith struggling to hit, Fowler could be in line for more playing time. Chase Utley hit his first home run for the Phillies and stole his second base of the year. Utley is now hitting .476 on the season…..Randy Wolf allowed one run in seven innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Juan Pierre stole his first base of the season for the Dodgers. Justin Upton sat the bench for the D-Backs again and could be in danger of being sent to AAA. Upton has five strikeouts in his nine at bats this season.

American League:

Travis Hafner hit his third home run of the season as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4. Kevin Millwood of the Texas Rangers turned in his second strong outing of the year, tossing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. He was denied the win when the Detroit Tigers rallied for six runs in the eight innings, sparked by Brandon Inge who hit his 4th home run of the season….. Evan Longoria hit his 5th home run of the year and stole his first base to help lead the Tampa Bay Rays to an 11-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Akinori Iwamura stole his third base of the year for the Rays…..Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye hit home runs to lead the Chicago White Sox over the Minnesota Twins. Mark Buerhle got his first win of the year, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings…..Joba Chamberlain made his debut for the New York Yankees, allowing one run in six innings with five strikeouts in a 6-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Brett Gardner stole his second base of the year for the Yankees. John Buck went 3 for 4 for the Roals with a home run and 3 RBI. Yankess first basemen Mark Teixeira sat out his second consecutive game with a sore left wrist…..Vladimir Guerrero hit his first home run and Chone Figgins stole his fifth base of the season as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-4. Dustin Pedroia stole his second base for the Boston Red Sox…..Erik Bedard threw 8 1/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Davis Aardsma got his second save of the season. Rookie Trevor Cahill was much better in his second start allowing one run and two hits in seven innings.
