2010 MLB Trade Tracker – Jason Bartlett to the Padres

With a day full of rumors and mystery teams, it was nice to see another good old fashioned trade break out. The Tampa Bay Rays continue to shed payroll by moving shortstop Jason Bartlett to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos.

Russell and Ramos will both get a shot to earn bullpen roles for the Rays with so many free agents departing, so they have little fantasy value for 2011. Bartlett will likely hit atop the San Diego lineup but he may find it tough to score runs. Outside of Ryan Ludwick, the Padres might not have another player that will hit more than 20 home runs this season.

From a fantasy baseball perspective, the big winner in the deal is Reid Brignac who takes over as full-time shortstop in Tampa Bay as well as a slight winner in Sean Rodriguez who has one less player that can steal at bats from him next year.

Brignac will qualify at either middle infield position in 2011 and should be good for around 10 home runs and 10 steals with an average in the .260s. He still has some work to do on his plate discipline as evidenced by his major league career mark of 24 walks and 102 strikeouts.

Projecting Hitters – The Impact of the Batting Order

There are numerous things to look at when projecting player performance in fantasy baseball, but one of the things I think that gets overlooked is the place in the batting order.

One of the key take aways from spring training is seeing where players are going to fall in each team’s line up. Moving up or down in the line up from the previous season is going to have a direct impact on a players stats.

Take for instance Erick Aybar of the Los Angeles Angels. With the loss of Chone Figgins, Aybar now has the chance to hit lead off for the entire season. What is the direct impact to him from a stat perspective?

If we look at Figgins numbers from last year, he had 716 plate appearances which includes walks and hits. Averaging that out per 158 games gives him 4.53 plate appearances per game. (I realize this number could be off by .1 or so for games he pinch hit or was a defensive replacement, left a game injured, etc.) but at a top level, 4.53 is the number.

Aybar had 534 plate appearances in 137 games which was good for 3.90 per game. So if we slot Aybar into a lead off spot for the entire season and he gets roughly the same number of plate appearances as  Figgins did last year, he would see an additional .63 plate appearances per game. Factoring that out over 150 games as a baseline gives Aybar an extra 95 plate appearances for this season; or in simpler terms almost an extra month worth of stats.

The same type of numbers apply for Jason Bartlett who looks destined to hit number one for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010. Hitting first last season, Bartlett averaged 4.39 plate appearances. At the other spots in the lineup, he averaged only 3.64 plate appearances.  Factoring that out over 150 games as a baseline and it gives him an additional 113 plate appearances over the course of the year.

Again, it is just another one of the many downsides when using magazines for statistical projections because the data is old and not fluid. Fantasy Baseball – May Shortstop Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May fantasy baseball statistics, here is a breakdown for the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for shortstops. It has been a pretty topsy-turvy year at shortstop with top three shortstops Jose Reyes and Jimmy Rollins under performing, and the breakouts of Jason Bartlett and Marco Scutaro.

Miguel Tejada looked dead in April with zero home runs and four RBI but bounced back nicely in May to lead all shortstops in RBI.  Jason Bartlett will miss at least the first two weeks of June on the disabled list with a sprained ankle. Jerry Hairston Jr. has been one of the bright spots on offense for the Cincinnati Red, playing six different positions already this season.

At least Jimmy Rollins is stealing bases, because he is not displaying signs of picking up his batting average or hitting home runs any time soon. Stephen Drew looks lost at the plate, striking out 19 times in 65 at bats in May. Missing time early in the season on the disabled list with a hamstring injury did not help. It also does not help the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to bat him clean up when he is struggling which puts more pressure on him to produce. He struck out eight times in the last three games of May. Juan Castro had more RBI than Rafael Furcal in May and is good insurance to have on the bench in National League only leagues as Furcal battles through minor injuries.
