2011 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings – Day 5 News and Notes

The big news of day five of the major league baseball winter meetings was a trade between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics with the Diamondbacks acquiring starting pitcher Trevor Cahill and Craig Breslow and Oakland picking up starting pitcher Jarrod Parker, outfielder Collin Cowgill and relief pitcher Ryan Cook.

Parker has been the D-Backs number one prospect for the last couple of seasons, but his path to the major leagues was sidetracked in 2009 when he underwent Tommy John surgery. He has a 3.49 career minor league ERA in 346 innings with 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He should be able to earn a spot in the Athletics rotation but has value in AL-only leagues at this point until he can get another season removed from the Tommy John surgery.

With all spots open in the Oakland outfield, Cowgill should see a full season of at bats. Cowgill had 92 at bats in Arizona last season, hitting .239 with a home run and four stolen bases. He hit .299 in his minor league career and had a 82% success rate on stolen bases going 72-for-88. He doesn’t offer a lot of power with a high of 16 home runs in the minor leagues, but he will have solid value in AL-only formats.

For the Diamondbacks, Cahill becomes a solid number three starter after Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson and he is under control through 2015 with club options in 2016 and 2017 at $13 and $13.5 million. He should see an increase in his strikeout rate with the move to the National League which gives him a little more value in fantasy baseball mixed-league formats.

The Tampa Bay Rays locked up left-handed starting pitcher Matt Moore with a five-year deal at $14 million with club options in 2017 – 2019. Despite the Rays rotation currently filled with five capable starters, expect someone to be traded by spring training with Moore stepping in. The only downside to his fantasy baseball value in 2012 is the fact that the team will likely limit his innings at some point of the season.

The Minor League Report – Week 6

Exciting news this week for fantasy baseball owners as two of the top five prospects in the minor leagues will be promoted within several days of each other. First basemen Eric Hosmer was promoted by the Kansas City Royals after hitting .429 in Triple-A with three home runs and 15 RBI and three stole bases. He also exhibited good place discipline with 19 walks against 16 strikeouts. Hosmer hit sixth in the lineup Friday night and went o-for-2 with two strikeouts, two walks and a stolen base.

In terms of fantasy value for a one-year league, he is someone to grab in all types of formats as hitters are hard to come by in the free agent market. Just keep in mind that regardless of how good a rookie does in the minor leagues, it does not ensure immediate success at the big league level. See Brandon Belt this year or Justin Smoak last year.

Julio Teheran, the top prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization will get the start on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The bad news is it will only be a spot start because the Braves have a doubleheader and they decided not to pitch a starter on short rest so Teheran will be headed back to Triple-A after his outing regardless of how well he pitches.

Outfielder Jaff Decker (SD) is off to a blazing start in AA, hitting .275 with nine home runs and 32 RBI in 27 games. A first round pick in 2008, Decker is looking to make up for time lost due to injury in 2010  as he got only 290 at bats. With the Padres in search of offense, Decker should get a look later this fall.

Teammate Casey Kelly, one of the key pieces in the Adrian Gonzalez deal has some work to do in AA. Kelly has a 3.78 ERA through six starts with hitters batting .284 against him. Kelly has walked nine and struck out 23 in 33 1/3 innings.

Domonic Brown has returned to action for the Philadelphia Phillies and is currently in Triple-A playing for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Since returning to the field, Brown is hitting .371 with three home runs and eight RBI in 35 at bats.

Catcher Devin Mesoraco of the Cincinnati Reds is biding his time at Triple-A where he is hitting .293 with three home runs and 12 RBI. He would likely be part of a trade package if the Reds go out and get a player like say a Jose Reyes or someone of that caliber before the trade deadline.

There were some concerns how first basemen Paul Goldschmidt (ARI) would fare against better pitching as moved up the farm system after striking out 161 times in 525 at bats in 2010. So far so good in 2011 as Goldschmidt is hitting .351 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI in 94 at bats in Double-A with 27 walks against 18 strikeouts.

After missing the entire 2010 season due to Tommy John surgery, it was expected that pitcher Jarrod Parker (AA) would have a ways to go to get back to the elite prospect level he was at. So far that theory has proven to be correct as he has struggled out of the gate with a 7.43 ERA in five starts with a .296 batting average against and 17 walks in 23 innings.

Fantasy Baseball Minor League Report – week 4

by Todd Lammi

Tommy Hanson picked up his first win of the season Thursday, tossing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts. Hanson threw 92 pitches, 58 for strikes, and allowed an even split of four ground ball and four fly outs. He is just waiting for the Atlanta Braves to make the call as he is major league ready right now. Other top prospects making a mark in minor league baseball in week 4…

Gordon Beckham has been in the news quite a bit recently with questions being asked of Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen about the potential for a Beckham call up. Beckham is hitting .300 in AA with two home runs and 10 doubles, plus a stolen base. He still has some work to do defensively before he is promoted to the major leagues.

Justin Smoak – the way he has been hitting, you might as well change his last name to Smoke. Currently in AA for the Texas Rangers, Smoak is hitting .351 with four home runs in 76 at bats. More importantly, check out the walk to strikeout ratio. With 16 walks against only 10 strikeouts, Smoak is displaying a great eye at the plate.

Jake Arrieta - in AA for the Baltimore Orioles, Arrieta struck out six in six innings for his last start. On the season, Arrieta has a 2.00 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 18 innings.

Madison Bumgarner – Bumgarner, part of the loaded team that is the San Jose Giants is off to a good start in 2009 with a 1.40 ERA, with 19 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings. His last start was the first time he allowed more than one run.

Buster Posey – Bumgarner’s teammate in San Jose, the catcher is hitting .366 with five home runs and an 11 to 13 walk to strikeout ratio.

Jarrod Parker – Parker made a quick move this season, blazing through high Class A up to Double-A for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Parker in his four starts in A ball, had a 0.95 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 19 innings.

Gerardo Parra – among the leaders in batting average in AA for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Parra is hitting .342 with a home run and five stolen bases. He has shown good plate discipline with 15 walks versus nine strikeouts.

Bud Norris - could be next in line when the Houston Astros need a starting pitcher. Norris has a 2.28 ERA in AAA with 25 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings. He still needs some work on his control, with 15 walks on the season, including six in his last start.

Dayan Viciedo – Viciedo was hot in spring training and there was some that thought he was close to the major leagues for the Chicago White Sox. The team sent him to AA and he has struggled there so far in the first month of the season, batting .221 with 20 strikeouts in 77 at bats.
