Every year fantasy baseball pundits will release their fantasy baseball sleeper lists and in most cases they are not really sleepers at all but players coming back from an injury or off of a down season. With the amount of information out there on the internet in regards to fantasy baseball, there really is no longer such a thing as a baseball sleeper because every player is known. Rather I would classify these players as more value players than sleepers. Someone that people might be forgetting about or might end up having a little more value than you think. With that in mind, here is a look at the 2011 fantasy baseball sleepers (value plays) for the American League East.
Nolan Reimold (BAL) – he was the toast of the town in 2009 before having Achilles tendon surgery at the end of the season. He wasn’t healthy by the time spring training started and was eventually sent down to Triple-A where he spent a good portion of the season, hitting .249 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 337 at bats. Will battle Felix Pie in the outfield for at bats so if he is healthy in 2011, there is a good chance he can get the majority of at bats.
Jed Lowrie (BOS) – was a first round pick by the Red Sox back in 2005 but has suffered injuries the last two seasons that have kept him out of action. Flashed some power last year with nine home runs in 171 at bats while showing improved plate discipline. More value in AL only leagues unless an injury occurs.
Jesus Montero (NYY) – not a sleeper but I think he gets more at bats than many expect. With Russell Martin at catcher and Jorge Posada at designated hitter, he is currently blocked for playing time but both of the guys ahead of him have had injuries in the past. Has a .308 career average in the minor leagues in 1,501 at bats. Hit 21 home runs with 75 RBI at age 20 in AAA.
J.P. Howell (TB) – with no clear cut favorite for saves in the Tampa Bay bullpen, Howell could be in the mix once he returns from injury in May. He missed all of the 2010 season due to shoulder surgery so there is a good chance many fantasy owners have forgotten about him. Howell was 17-for-25 in saves in 2009 with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.
Edwin Encarnacion - with all of the concentration on Jose Bautista in Toronto, some may have missed out on the new Toronto first basemen / designated hitter with Lyle Overbay out of the picture. If you have done your fantasy baseball rankings for third base, you will notice that the position is the weakest in baseball this year. Encarnacion is one guy in the middle of the pack that can provide 20+ home run power if he is healthy.
