2010 Waiver Wire – Week 15

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 15.

American League only:

2B/SS/3B – Jayson Nix – since being claimed off of waivers by the Cleveland Indians, Nix has been on a hot streak. Nix has boosted his overall average to .230 with five home runs and eight RBI since coming to Cleveland. He is a nice middle infield play in mixed leagues if he continues to hit. Qualifies at second base but may also qualify at shortstop (15 games in 2009) and third base (16 games in 2010) depending on your league requirements.

2B / OF – Eric Patterson – Patterson is nothing flashy, but I expect him to play at least two or three days a week while Dustin Pedroia is injured.  I feel his main asset is his speed, but if he can get you a few homers and runs, then even better. He has seven games at second base this season and played five games there last year so he may or may not yet be eligible to play thee in your fantasy baseball league depending on your league requirements.

OF – Michael Brantley – Brantley was called up a few days ago and should see extensive playing time while Shin-Soo Choo is on the disabled list. In 28 major league games in 2009 Brantley hit .313 with 11 RBI with 4 SB’s and had 46 steals in Triple-A in 2009.  After starting 2010 in the majors, Brantley was sent down in mid April after being unable to maintain a .200 average.  While at Triple-A, Brantley hit .319 with 26 RBI and 11 steals.  Brantley is still struggling to hit with his average now under .150.  If you have a spot on your bench for him until he can figure things out, he’s worth the gamble.

RP – Matt Thornton – Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen made things interesting by having Thornton close out Sunday’s game with Bobby Jenks back from his bereavement leave.  Guillen had Jenks then pitch in the 8th inning in Monday’s game with a seven run lead.    Although Jenks got the save on Tuesday, Thornton should still continue to get save chances from time to time.  Also keep on eye on J.J. Putz who could see some save opportunities if one of the three is moved at the trade deadline.

National League only:

3B – Greg Dobbs – Dobbs was recently called up from Triple-A will serve as the third basemen in Philadelphia while Placido Polanco is on the disabled list. Dobbs has a little bit of power and is worth a short-term pick up in the meantime.

C – Justin Thole – Thole is seeing extended action behind the plate for the New York Mets. The team could be showcasing him for a trade as his name has come up in several rumors. If you have to start two catchers in your league, Thole is not going to hurt you in any category.

12/15 Team Mixed League:

OF – Dexter Fowler – the best thing to happen to Fowler was to be sent down to Triple-A which served as a reality check. There, Fowler hit 340 in 106 at bats with two home runs and 13 RBI. Colorado has four outfielders they can rotate so I can see Fowler playing at least four times per week. With his speed and if he continues to bat at the top of the order, Fowler is a great player to spot start depending on how your league transaction work.

SP - Marc Rzepczynski – Rzepczynski was projected as a starter for the Toronto Blue Jays before breaking his finger at the end of spring training. He may have some control issues but I think he has promise as a back end of the rotation guy. In his first start of the season this week against Minnesota, he worked 5 /23 innings with four runs allowed and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Baseball – the Daily Dirt for Friday

by Todd Lammi

It was light day for fantasy baseball teams on offense on Friday night, as 15 teams scored two runs or less. The Colorado Rockies were the only team to score in double digits, erupting with a nine-run seventh inning to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-4. Dexter Fowler hit his third home run of the season and Ian Stewart hit his ninth. Recent call up Carlos Gonzalez arrived late for the game and appeared in the 8th inning, going 0 for 1.  Albert Pujols (18), Ryan Ludwick (9) and Yadier Molina (4) all went deep for the Cardinals. In other fantasy baseball news around the diamond on Friday…

Hitters:

Adam Lind followed up his 5 for 5 night, by going 2 for 4 with a home run. Lind’s recent hot streak has raised his batting average 33 points in his last seven games.

Pablo Sandoval went 2 for 4 with two RBI and delivered his fourth home run of the season. Sandoval is now hitting .306 on the season with 24 RBI on the year.

Carlos Lee went 2 for 5 and drove in four runs on a grand slam, giving him 10 home runs on the season.Lee is now batting .317 on the year with 35 RBI.

Luke Scott homered for the second straight day, and has now homered in six of his last nine games with 18 RBI during that stretch.

Pitchers:

Justin Verlander tossed eight shutout innings with seven strikeouts, but lost his seventh win of the season when Fernando Rodney allowed two runs in the ninth inning. Verlander who last lost on April 17th has allowed five hits or less in six of his last seven starts.

Ricky Romero allowed three runs in seven innings with five strikeouts to pick up his first win in a month and a half.

Kevin Millwood hurled seven shutout innings with five strikeouts to improve his record to 5-4 on the season. Millwood has allowed three runs or less in five of his last six starts.

Carlos Zambrano pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts to notch his fourth win of the year and his 100th career victory. Zambrano helped his cause by hitting his second home run of the season and is now hitting .269 on the year.

Yovani Gallardo scattered two hits in eight shutout innings with six strikeouts to up his mark to 6-2 on the season. Gallardo has had scoreless starts in two of his past three outings.

Mike Hampton allowed one run in seven innings with five strikeouts to even his mark at 4-4. Hampton has allowed one run in back-to-back starts while dropping his ERA by a full run over those two appearances.

Carl Pavano pitched nine scoreless innings with six punch outs to gain his sixth win of the year. Pavano has allowed four runs in his last 23 1/3 innings with 16 strikeouts.

Dallas Braden allowed one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts to even his record at 5-5. Braden has allowed three runs or less in four consecutive starts while going 2-0 during that stretch.

Felix Hernandez allowed one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts in a no decision. His inconsistency is the only thing keeping him from taking the next step to one of the top pitchers in the game. In his last nine starts, Fernandez has had four outings with zero run, two outings with one run and three outings with five or six runs allowed.

Closers:

Some people scoffed earlier this year when I said Jonathan Broxton was the best reliever in the national league. He picked up his sixth win Friday night to move to a perfect 6-0 on the season. He has allowed only nine hits in 28 innings of work with 45 strikeouts on the year.

Fantasy Baseball – May Outfield Rankings

by Todd Lammi

Instead of using some complicated formula to review May statistics, here is a breakdown of the numbers for the month sorted by RBI, for outfielders.

Who needs Manny Ramirez? Juan Pierre was 12th among outfielders with 18 RBI in the month of May. Gerardo Parra (#23) seems to have successfully made the jump from AA to the major leagues with little problems. Although he does not have much power, think 10 home runs to 15 home runs max, he will hit close to .300 and drive in runs. Carl Crawford put up staggering numbers in May, with .355-28-3-15-21.

Nick Swisher has slowed down after his big April, with a line of .150-9-3-10-0 in May. Daniel Murphy has not been able to take advantage of the absence of Carlos Delgado, posting .176-8-3-10-0. Jordan Schafer was ticketed for Triple-A after going .158-8-0-5-1 with 40 strikeouts in 101 at bats. Dexter Fowler has struggled the second and third time around the league as pitchers adjusted, going .237-10-0-3-2.

Fantasy Baseball – the Daily Dirt for Monday

by Todd Lammi

Hitters:

Jose Guillen, back from the disabled list with a vengeance, launched two home runs and drove in three runs in a 7-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Michael Young hit his 6th home run in the Texas Rangers 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He will also gain 3B eligibility this week for those fantasy baseball leagues with a 20 game position eligibility requirement.

Raul Ibanez hit home run number six and drove in four runs. Ibanez is a guy I love to own in fantasy baseball. He keeps getting older, but continue to perform year after year. Plus because of age, he usually goes several rounds later in drafts than he should.

Ryan Zimmerman hit two home runs, score three runs and had 3 RBI and is now batting .295 on the season.

Carlos Pena hit home run number nine and drove in three runs for the Tampa Bay Rays. Pena is now up to 24 RBI on the season.

Dexter Fowler stole five (5!!!) bases against the San Diego Padres. As a team, the Colorado Rockies stole eight in the game.

Troy Tulowitzki – it was only two years ago that he was being compared to a young Derek Jeter as a rookie, now Tulowitzki is headed to the bench to try to break him out of a slump. Hopefully this season he won’t splinter any bats in anger.

Pitchers:

Brian Bannister had his second solid outing since being recalled from Triple-A, allowing one run in seven innings for the Royals.

Joel Pineiro got the win for the St. Louis Cardinals to go to 4-0. Looking closer at his numbers, 26 1/3 innings, 6 walks, 6 strikeouts and a .303 batting average against does not spell long term success. If you own him, I would be looking to trade him at this point.

Tim Wakefield has the knuckle ball dancing so far this year, tossing seven scoreless innings on Monday with five strikeouts.

Cliff Lee seems to be back on track, tossing eight scoreless innings and has now allowed three runs in his last 20 innings

Justin Verlander tossed seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. Keep an eye on his home / road splits when he starts. Currently his ERA on the road is 9.00; at home it is 0.75.

Johnny Cueto is putting together a nice start to the 2009 season. Cueto allowed one run in seven innings with five strikeouts and has now given up two runs in his last 18 2/3 innings.

Dan Haren hurled a complete game shutout, allowing two runs with 10 strikeouts. He has been so dominant this season that allowing two runs in nine innings raised his ERA.

Closers:

Joel Hanrahan blew save number three on the year, allowing three runs in 13 of an inning. It is time for the Washington Nationals to give someone else a shot in that role.

Ryan Madson got his first save of the season in place of Brad Lidge who was out with a sore knee. Lidge is considered to be day to day.
