2010 Two Start Pitchers – Week 22

Here is a complete look at the fantasy baseball two-start pitchers for week 22. Obviously the top tier pitchers are going to be left in your line up, but here is a look at some of the more border line pitchers for mixed league starts and who they face in those starts.

2 start pitchers week 22: remember again that the list below is more focused on mixed leagues since in AL or NL only leagues in most cases you do not have the option to rotate too many starting pitchers with the smaller player pool. The pitchers below are listed in alphabetical order by team name per category.

American League:

Start them:

Brian Duensing (MIN) ~ DET (Galarraga), TEX (Lee)
Phil Hughes (NYY) ~ OAK (Mazzaro), TOR (Cecil)
Trevor Cahill (OAK) ~ @NYY (Moseley), LAA (Santana)
Felix Hernandez (SEA) ~ LAA (Santana), CLE (Masterson)
C.J. Wilson (TEX) ~ @KC (Davies), @MIN (Duensing)

Roll the Dice:

Josh Beckett (BOS) ~ @BAL (Matusz), CWS (Buehrle)
Mark Buehrle (CHW) ~ @CLE (Talbot), @BOS (Beckett)
Armando Galarraga (DET) ~ @MIN (Duensing), @KC (Davies)
Dan Haren (LAA) ~ @SEA (Pauley), @OAK (Mazzaro)
Dustin Moseley (NYY) ~ OAK (Cahill), TOR (Rzepczynski)
Vin Mazzaro (OAK) ~ @NYY (Hughes), LAA (Haren)
David Pauley (SEA) ~ LAA (Haren), CLE (Talbot)
Wade Davis (TB) ~ TOR (Cecil), @BAL (Matusz)
Brett Cecil (TOR) ~ @TB (Davis), @NYY (Hughes)
Ervin Santana (LAA) ~ SEA (Hernandez), @OAK (Cahill)

Beckett has been rocked in three of his past four starts, allowing 22 runs in 22 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs in seven innings in his lone start against Baltimore and has yet to face the White Sox this season. If you are trying to catch up in stats, then you probably have to take your chances and hope for two good starts. If you are trying to protect your team ERA and WHIP, it is probably best to have him on the bench. Buerhle is 6-3 in his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less in eight of those starts. Galarraga has been better the second half of the season despite only one win in eight starts. ERA of 3.60 with 1.28 WHIP plus uptick in his strikeout rate gives him the benefit of the doubt for now. Haren’s numbers haven been slightly better in the American League with a drop in strikeouts as he now faces a designated hitter. His batting average against in both leagues has been much higher than in 2009 giving some cause for concern for his value in keeper leagues. Moseley is good for wins but allowing a home run every five innings does not bode well for long term success. Mazzaro has not won since July 24th despite allowing three runs or less in five straight starts. Pauley has two home starts where he has a 2.66 ERA and 1.10 WHIP vs. 5.40 and 1.54 on the road. Davis has not lost since June 27th and has allowed two runs or less in five of his last six starts. Cecil has carried over his performance from the first half to the second with a slightly lower ERA and a slightly higher WHIP. His start on August 14th when he allowed seven runs was the only time in his last nine outings that he allowed more than three runs. Santana has not been as sharp since the All-Star break and faces two tough opposing starters next week making him a tough start.

Sit Them:

Brian Matusz (BAL) ~ BOS (Beckett), TB (Davis)
Justin Masterson (CLE) ~ CWS (Jackson), @SEA (Hernandez)
Mitch Talbot (CLE) ~ CWS (Buehrle), @SEA (Pauley)
Kyle Davies (KC) ~ TEX (Wilson), DET (Galarraga)

Talbot has not won since June 27th and is 1-6 in his last 10 starts. Masterson allows too many hits and too many walks to have success as a starter on a consistent basis. Matusz has been better of late, but has a 6.06 ERA vs. Tampa Bay with a 1.53 WHIP, his second start next week. Against Boston, his numbers are 2.41 and 1.18.

National League:

Start them:

Mike Minor (ATL) ~ NYM (Niese), @FLA (Sanabia)
Travis Wood (CIN) ~ MIL (Wolf), @STL (Carpenter)
Hiroki Kuroda (LAD) ~ PHI (Halladay), SF (Sanchez)
Jon Niese (NYM) ~ @ATL (Minor), @CHC (Zambrano)
Roy Halladay (PHI) ~ @LAD (Kuroda), MIL (Bush)
Jonathan Sanchez (SF) ~ COL (De La Rosa), @LAD (Kuroda)

Roll the Dice:

Jair Jurrjens (ATL) ~ NYM (Misch), @FLA (Johnson)
Carlos Zambrano (CHC) ~ PIT (Maholm), NYM (Niese)
Jorge De La Rosa (COL) ~ @SF (Sanchez), @SD (Richard)
J.A. Happ (HOU) ~ STL (Westbrook), @ARI (Saunders)
Randy Wolf (MIL) ~ @CIN (Wood), @PHI (Kendrick)
Kyle Kendrick (PHI) ~ @LAD (Monasterios), MIL (Wolf)
Wade LeBlanc (SD) ~ @ARI (Saunders), COL (Rogers)
Jake Westbrook (STL) ~ @HOU (Happ), CIN (Wood)

Throw out Jurrjens last start at Colorado and he had went four straight starts with three runs allowed or less. Allowed four runs in seven innings in his start against Florida back on July 25th. Zambrano has been good in the ERA department but his control has been Carlos Marmol like with 16 walks in 24 innings.  De La Rosa has been on a roll, allowing three runs or less in seven straight starts while striking out five or more in six of those outings. Happ has had only one really bad start since the All-Star break and it was against St. Louis, allowing seven runs in one inning. The same team he happens to face in his first start next week. Other than that start, the other six starts were all three runs or less. Wolf has won three of his last four starts and allowed two runs or less in four or his last six appearances. Kendrick has been streaky, either pitching very well or getting hit hard. He has been much better on the road with a 3.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP vs. 5.50 and 1.46 at home. If you have daily or bi-weekly transactions, keep that in mind. LeBlanc walks a fine line to get wins in San Diego, usually needing to surrender three runs or less to get a decision. He has allowed four or more runs in four of his last 10 starts. He just faced Arizona this week, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings.  The move to the National League has agreed with Westbrook, sporting a 1.10 WHIP and striking out a batter per inning.

Sit Them:

Joe Saunders (AZ) ~ SD (LeBlanc), HOU (Happ)
Esmil Rogers (COL) ~ @SF (Bumgarner), @SD (LeBlanc)
Alejandro Sanabia (FLA) ~ WAS (Marquis), ATL (Minor)
Paul Maholm (PIT) ~ @CHC (Zambrano), WAS (Marquis)
Jason Marquis (WAS) ~ @FLA (Sanabia), @PIT (Marquis)
Pat Misch (NYM) ~ @ATL (Jurrjens), @CHC (Coleman)

Saunders was supposed to see a drop in his numbers with the move to the National League, instead, his ERA and WHIP have both gone up. He has allowed a home run in eight straight starts. Maholm is 2-6 in his last 10 starts and with little strikeouts to speak of, not much incentive to have him in your rotation. Sanabia is too unpredictable to use at this point of the season in mixed leagues unless you are desperate for wins.

2010 Two Start Pitchers – Week 9

Here is a complete look at the fantasy baseball two-start pitchers for week 9. Obviously the top tier pitchers are going to be left in your line up, but here is a look at some of the more border line pitchers for mixed league starts and who they face in those starts.

Two-start pitchers week 9: remember again that the list below is more focused on mixed leagues since in AL or NL only leagues in most cases you do not have the option to rotate too many starting pitchers with the smaller player pool. The pitchers below are listed in alphabetical order by team name per category.

American League:

Start them:

John Lackey (BOS) ~ OAK (Gonzalez), at BAL (Matusz)
Justin Verlander (DET) ~ at OAK (Cahill), at KC (Hochevar)
Jeremy Bonderman (DET) ~ CLE (Westbrook), at KC (Bannister)
Ervin Santana (LAA) ~ at KC (Hochevar), at SEA (Fister)
Francisco Liriano (MIN) ~ at SEA (Fister), at OAK (Cahill)
Andy Pettitte (NYY) ~ CLE (Talbot), at TOR (Morrow)
Doug Fister (SEA) ~ MIN (Liriano), LAA (Santana)
Matt Garza (TB) ~ at TOR (Marcum), at TEX (Harden)
Shaun Marcum (TOR) ~ TB (Garza), NYY (Vazquez)

Roll the Dice:

Mark Buehrle (CHW) ~ TEX (Harden), CLE (Westbrook)
Brian Bannister (KC) ~ LAA (Pineiro), DET (Bonderman)
Luke Hochevar (KC) ~ LAA (Santana), DET (Verlander)
Joel Pineiro (LAA) ~ at KC (Bannister), at SEA (Vargas)
Nick Blackburn (MIN) ~ at SEA (Vargas), at OAK (Gonzalez)
Gio Gonzalez (OAK) ~ at BOS (Lackey), MIN (Blackburn)
Trevor Cahill (OAK) ~ at DET (Verlander), MIN (Liriano)
Jason Vargas (SEA) ~ BAL (Blackburn), at TOR (Pineiro)

Bannister has run off three good starts, allowing eight runs in 18 1/3 innings. He has faced Detroit already twice this year, allowing three runs in 12 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Blackburn has run off five straight wins, but if you look at the numbers, there is nothing especially impressive to see, with a 4.28 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and a .305 batting average against. Add to it only 17 strikeouts in 61 innings and it makes his win streak all the more amazing. This will be Buehrle’s 4th start of the year against Cleveland already. He has allowed three earned runs in 15 1/3 innings against them. In an earlier start against Texas, he allowed four runs in seven innings. As I mentioned in an article several weeks ago, Pineiro has been good in all of his starts against a team for the first time this season, except for St. Louis who knew him since he pitched there last season. He gets KC and SEA each for the first time this year. Hochevar gets two home starts where he has a 3.45 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP this season.

Sit Them:

Brian Matusz (BAL) ~ at NYY (Vazquez), BOS (Lackey)
Jake Westbrook (CLE) ~ at DET (Bonderman), at CHW (Buehrle)
Mitch Talbot (CLE) ~ at NYY (Pettitte), at CHW (Peavy)
Javier Vazquez (NYY) ~ BLA (Matusz), at TOR (Marcum)
Rich Harden (TEX) ~ at CHW (Buehrle), TB (Garza)

Matusz has a 7.50 ERA in May and has allowed 38 hits in 24 innings. Westbrook has faced Chicago three times this year already and got hit hard in two of those starts.

National League:

Start them:

Tim Hudson (ATL) ~ PHI (Hamels), at LAD (Ely)
Tommy Hanson (ATL) ~ PHI (Blanton), at LAD (Billingsley)
Ubaldo Jimenez (COL) ~ at SF  (Lincecum), at ARI (Lopez)
Ricky Nolasco (FLA) ~ MIL (Bush), at NYM (Pelfrey)
Roy Oswalt (HOU) ~ WAS (Atilano), CHC (Dempster)
Chad Billingsley (LAD) ~ ARI (Lopez), ATL (Hanson)
John Ely (LAD) ~ ARI (Haren), ATL (Hudson)
Mike Pelfrey (NYM) ~ at SD (LeBlanc), FLA (Nolasco)
Hisanori Takahashi (NYM) ~ at SD (Correia), FLA (Robertson)
Tim Lincecum (SF) ~ COL (Jimenez), at PIT (Ohlendorf)
Jaime Garcia (STL) ~ CIN (Arroyo), MIL (Bush)

Roll the Dice:

Carlos Zambrano (CHC) ~ at PIT (Ohlendorf), at HOU (Myers)
Bronson Arroyo (CIN) ~ at STL (Garcia), at WAS (Stammen)
Brett Myers (HOU) ~ WAS (Stammen), CHC (Zambrano)
Joe Blanton (PHI) ~ at ATL (Hanson), SD (Correia)
Kevin Correia (SD) ~ NYM (Takahashi), at PHI (Blanton)

Arroyo has picked up wins in 5 of his last 6 starts and has cut his ERA by a full run over his last four outings. Despite losing three of his past four starts, Correia has not pitched that badly. Tossed six shutout innings in his last start against St. Louis.

Sit Them:

Rodrigo Lopez (ARI) ~ at LAD (Billingsley), COL (Jimenez)
Nate Robertson (FLA) ~ MIL (Narveson), at NYM (Takahashi)
Dave Bush (MIL) ~ at FLA (Nolasco), at STL (Garcia)
Chris Narveson (MIL) ~ at FLA (Robertson), at STL (Wainwright)
Ross Ohlendorf (PIT) ~ CHC (Zambrano), SF (Lincecum)
Craig Stammen (WAS) ~ at HOU (Myers), CIN (Arroyo)
Luis Atilano (WAS) ~ at HOU (Oswalt), CIN (Leake)

Hopefully if you are in a mixed league you don’t have any of these pitchers on your team so you don’t even have to think about starting any of them.

The Daily Dirt from Thursday

I had a chance to watch Brian Matusz in his start Thursday night and while there were some things I liked, there were a couple of concerns I had. He got himself into way too many three ball counts and ended up walking five batters. Part of the problem was Tampa Bay hitters were able to fight off his fastball most of the night, resulting in a whopping 25 foul ball strikes.

While he has four pitches he can throw for strikes, he still needs to do a better job of putting hitters away. Yes, I say this despite the fact he struck out seven hitters in five inning. He also recorded zero ground ball outs and six fly ball outs. He was able to record two outs via pick-off moves. In other fantasy baseball news around the diamond on Thursday…

Hitters:

Vernon Wells hit his 4th home of the season, giving him seven RBI on the young season.

Chris Davis sat against the lefty starter Ricky Romero in place of Ryan Garko. If you are a Davis owner, you have to hope this is not going to be a permanent platoon situation.

Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-5 with four RBI and drilled his second home of the year.

Chipper Jones will miss the next 2-3 days with a strained oblique with Omar Infante expected to fill in for him.

Pitchers:

Brad Penny was good, 7 innings with one run and four strikeouts (ah, the magic of Dave Duncan) while Bronson Arroyo was just a little better in 8 innings with one run allowed and six strikeouts, though neither factored in the decision.

Similar results in Texas as Ricky Romero (7 innings, one run four k’s) squared off with C.J. Wilson,7 scoreless innings and nine strikeouts. I had a chance to catch part of the game and Wilson looked legit as a starter. He had some natural tail to his fastball as a lefty so it looked like a screwball at times. The announcers mentioned Wilson’s goal is 12 pitchers per inning and he was pretty close to that with 98 through seven innings of work. By the end of the season, it is not unrealistic to think that Wilson may be the most valuable Texas starter from a fantasy standpoint.

Brett Anderson tossed six shutout innings with four strikeouts to notch his first win of the year.

Randy Wells used 13 ground ball outs in six scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves to earn a win. Wells walked two and struck out one in the game.

Jeff Niemann of the Tampa Bay Rays lasted only four hitters before leaving the game after being hit with a line drive from Miguel Tejada in his pitching shoulder.

Closers:

Frank Francisco blew Wilson’s win, allowing four hits and three runs in the ninth inning.

Leo Nunez rebounded from his poor outing the previous night to work a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save.

Fantasy Baseball Minor League Report – week 7

by Todd Lammi

The Baltimore Orioles have several good arms making their way up the minor league ladder. One of the lesser known names, David Hernandez may be ready to join the O’s rotation by September if he continues at his current pace. Hernandez, currently in AAA, struck out 14 in 7 1/3 innings in his last start and now has 60 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings on the season with a 2.91 ERA.

Brian Matusz (Orioles) in Advanced A, struck out nine in seven innings in his last start and has 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings with a 3.09 ERA.

Matt Wieters (Orioles) in AAA has homered four times in his last eight games, and now stands at .288 with five home runs and 24 RBI.

Third basemen Brett Wallace (Cardinals) has been promoted to Triple-A. He is currently hitting .312 with six home runs and 19 RBI on the season.

Tommy Hanson (Braves) continues to cruise through AAA, allowing one hit in six shutout innings in his last start with nine strikeouts. He has now fanned 73 in 53 2/3 innings with a 1.51 ERA and is holding opposing hitters to a .160 batting average.

Catcher J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) has flashed power in AAA, but still needs work on controlling the strike zone to improve his batting average. Arencibia is hitting .250 with seven home runs and 27 RBI, but just nine walks in 144 at bats, although that is an improvement over his AA numbers with seven walks in 262 at bats.

Junichi Tazawa (Red Sox) pitched six shutout innings in his last start in AA and is now 4-3 with a 2.74 ERA. In 49 1/3 innings, he has struck out 47 while allowing only three home runs.

Matt Latos (Padres) is off to a great start in AA after starting the season shelved with an injury. Latos currently sports a 0.36 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings, while limiting batters to a .120 average.

One player who has not been part of the Triple-A shuttle for the Oakland Athletics as the major league team continues to juggle its pitching rotation has been Vin Mazzaro. Mazzaro in AAA has a 2.66 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings.  He has allowed two runs in his last 21 2/3 innings, including eight innings of shutout ball in his last start.

Carlos Torres (White Sox) is a little bit old for the AAA level at 26, but he is putting up numbers worthy of a look, with a 1.76 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 46 innings. He is holding opposing hitters to a .193 average and has yet to allow a home run this season.

With David Ortiz struggling in Boston, the Red Sox could use some more offense. Lars Anderson, the first baseman of the future, has been off to a slow start in AA, hitting .234 with five home runs and 23 RBI. He has struck out 35 times in 137 at bats.
