The Closer Report – Week 18

Here is a look at the fantasy baseball closer report for week 18. It contains all of the most recent closer news, plus the current closers and the current handcuffs.

The trade of Matt Capps to Minnesota installed him as the new closer and moved Jon Rauch to a set up role. Capps has gone almost two months since blowing a save back on June 6th. The Washington Nationals will go with a committee of Drew Storen, Ty Clippard and Sean Burnett, although Storen is the name to own in keeper and dynasty leagues.

Bobby Jenks stay out of the closer role was short lived last week as he was moved back into the role for the White Sox after one scoreless inning. He picked up two saves in two innings while striking out five in his last two appearances.

Jonathan Broxton has not appeared to be the same dominant closer since allowing four runs against the New York Yankees back on June 27th. His numbers were downright scary in July with a 7.45 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP ratio. Hong-Chih Kuo has been lights out in the bullpen and could see some additional spot chances if Broxton continues to struggle the rest of the way as could recently acquired Octavio Dotel.

The trade of  Dotel in Pittsburgh slots either Evan Meek or Joel Hanrahan into the closer role although no official announcement has been made. Both pitchers have posted solid numbers with Hanrahan striking out 12.5 hitters per nine compared to Meek at 7.6

Aaron Heilman picked up a save last week for the Arizona Diamondbacks and looks like he could see some chances along with Juan Gutierrez the rest of the season.

Here is a look at some of the closer numbers for the month of July:
