2012 Waiver Wire – Week 10

At this point of the season, the pickings are getting pretty slim if you are playing in an AL or NL-only type format. The key in fantasy baseball is the same as it is in business, trying to find that next big thing before anyone else knows about it. If you have the room on your bench, now is the time to start prospecting the minor leagues for the top hitters and pitchers that will be coming up in the next month or two. If you need immediate help, then there were a few players that were called up this week that could be worth a look.

Here is a look at some other players that might be out on the waiver wire in your fantasy baseball league in week 10 to consider adding with your FAAB budget or waiver claim.

American League Only:

C – Salvador Perez (KC) – he may be off of your radar after suffering a torn meniscus in March, but Perez is ready to start his rehab assignment and is expected to be ready and back in the major leagues by the beginning of July. More of an option in deeper AL-only formats or two catcher leagues if you need to replace a second catcher in your lineup.

1B – Brandon Moss (OAK) – the carousel at first base continues for the Oakland Athletics as they are still searching for that replacement for Jason Giambi that they have never quite found. Moss was hitting .286 at Triple-A in 196 at bats with 15 home runs and 33 RBI, but we have seen him before in the major leagues and the results were less than impressive. In 684 career major league at bats, Moss has hit 16 home runs with 79 RBI and a .235 batting average.

National League Only:

SP – Joe Kelly (STL) – replaces Jaime Garcia in the Cardinals rotation and will get his first start Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. A third round pick from the 2009 draft, Kelly had a 2.86 ERA in 12 starts with 45 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings. This has been somewhat of a breakout season for him so far after posting a 5.01 ERA in 11 starts at Double-A last season. Given his minor league track record and inability to miss bats, I am not rushing to grab him from the waiver wire.

SP – Chris Young (NYM) – he made it through his first start of 2012 in one piece with two runs allowed in five innings of work, but a guy with just eight starts between the 2010-2011 season is not someone you want to pin your hopes on to fill holes in your pitching staff. He could help out a team for a few weeks despite his lack of velocity, but you better have a backup plan and player ready to replace him when he inevitably breaks down.
