Here is the minor league report for the 2010 New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate for the Florida Marlins.
The key name to note on the roster is first basemen Logan Morrison. He was in competition for the first base job in spring with the Florida Marlins before losing out to Gaby Sanchez. Walked more than he struck out last year with 63 walks vs. 46 whiffs. Career batting average is .289 with a one-year high in home runs of 24 in 2007.
Scott Cousins and Bryan Petersen, both outfielders, seem stuck in the same boat with not much room in the Marlins outfield unless Dan Uggla is traded and Chris Coghlan is moved to second base. In addition, the top prospect in the farm system Mike Stanton will likely jump over both of them once a job opens up so they may be both relegated to reserve outfielder status in the major leagues.
Another name to keep an eye on is pitcher Ryan Tucker. He was rushed to the major leagues at age 21 in 2008 and then missed almost all of 2009 due to knee surgery so his progress has been hampered somewhat. With a minor league WHIP of 1.39, he still needs a lot of work on his control before his next shot at the major leagues.
How they rank:
Baseball America: Morrison (2), Tucker (6), Cousins (9)
Keith Law: Morrison (2), Cousins (5), Petersen (6)
John Sickels: Morrison (2), Tucker (5), Cousins (7), Petersen (8)
