2011 Fantasy Baseball – NL Hitting Stats

Nearing the end of the third week of the season and close to 50 at bats in the book, it is time to start looking to see if there are any early trends in terms or at bats or performance that could lead us to make some adjustments in terms of statistical projections for the rest of the season. While 50 at bats may seem like a small sample size and it is, we can watch the trends to see if they continue over the next few weeks to then get ahead of the other fantasy baseball owners in your league.

With that said, here is a look around the National League in order of runs scored per team to see if there are any numbers that stand out:

Cincinnati Reds: currently the highest scoring offense in all of major league baseball, the Reds have a couple of players that stand out. Jonny Gomes has all of a sudden turned into Frank Thomas at the plate, walking 14 times with only eight strikeouts, after a 39 walk to 123 strikeout season in 2010. Drew Stubbs has cut his strikeout rate four percentage points so far in 2011 which should give him a better chance to make some small gains in batting average. Jay Bruce on the other hand is heading in the wrong direction with a 10 percentage point jump in strikeouts, leaving him with 15k’s in 41 at bats and a .220 average.

Philadelphia Phillies: despite the loss of Jayson Werth to free agency and Chase Utley to injury, the Phillies are second in the National League in runs scored, thanks to six of the regulars hitting over .300. Wilson Valdez has been solid at second base and is hitting .351 with a stolen base and should be owned in all NL-only formats. Catcher Carlos Ruiz has gotten off to a good start as well hitting the same .351 with tow home runs and eight RBI.

Colorado Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki is justifying his position as a top 5 pick in fantasy baseball drafts this year, hitting .364 with seven home runs and 14 RBI. Jonathan Herrera has been the big surprise, hitting .458 with four stolen bases and eight walks against two strikeouts and is likely to start eating into Jose Lopez’s playing time.

St. Louis Cardinals: Lance Berkman has been the story in St. Louis so far with a .311 batting average and four home runs to go with 11 RBI. So far his move to the outfield has been going well, but I would still bet on an injury at some point this season. David Freese has hit when playing, batting .342 with two home runs and six RBI, but with him sitting out every third or fourth game, it makes him tough to own in mixed league formats.

Arizona Diamondbacks: only five players on the team currently have over 30 at bats this season and one of them is Willie Bloomquist who filled in nicely while Stephen Drew was out. The rest of the players like Gerardo Parra, Mevlin Mora, Juan Miranda, Russell Branyan, etc. are splitting too much time to give them any value in mixed leagues.

New York Mets: David Wright seems to have made progress on his strikeouts as his rate is at 25% which gives him a much better chance to hit over .300 again. Brad Emaus (30 at bats) and Daniel Murphy (27 at bats) are still in a battle for the second base job. Murphy has a lot more value in fantasy leagues because of his multi-position eligibility.

Houston Astros: who would have guessed that the best hitter on the Astros at this point would be Angel Sanchez? Sanchez is hitting .353 with one home run, eight RBI and a stolen base. Jason Boureois has some value in deeper NL-only leagues since he does not get many at bats, but he has managed to steal four bases early on thanks to some pinch-running.

Chicago Cubs: rookie Darwin Barney has been a pleasant surprise, hitting .345 with three walks and only one strikeout in 29 at bats. Tyler Colvin has seen additional time this week with Kosuke Fukudome out with a bad hamstring;.

Milwaukee Brewers: Nyjer Morgan has been out hitting Carlos Gomez which has not been an issue yet since Corey Hart has been out of the lineup, but once he returns, someone is going to lose some playing time. Prince Fielder looks motivated as he heads toward free agency and is hitting .372 with three home runs and 15 RBI.

Florida Marlins: Logan Morrison looks to be ahead of schedule in terms of the power department with three home runs and five doubles this season to go with nine walks and nine strikeouts. Donnie Murphy has not been the answer at third base, hitting just .143 in 28 at bats.

San Francisco Giants: I wrote last season about the impact of people changing positions and what it meant to their batting stats. It is too early to tell if we are seeing that with Aubrey Huff, but he definitely doesn’t look comfortable in the outfield. There was talk of switching Huff and rookie Brandon Belt in the field, but Belt is hitting .195 and moving him to the outfield is not going to help matters. There is also the issue of Cody Ross returning to the lineup soon which will impact at bats as well.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Matt Kemp looks like a new man this season and is hitting .444 with two home runs and eight stolen bases, to go with nine walks and only seven strikeouts. Jamey Carroll is hitting .372 with two stolen bases and has more value now with Rafael Furcal out of action due to injury.

Washington Nationals: lots of young hitters struggling in Washington around the Mendoza line, including free agent signee Jayson Werth. Wilson Ramos has been one of the few guys hitting with a .455 batting average and should see more time going forward over Ivan Rodriguez.

Atlanta Braves: the lone bright spot in Atlanta on offense is that Chipper Jones is healthy and hitting with a .304 average with one home run. Rookie Freddie Freeman has struggled with a .214 average and Alex Gonzalez has returned to earth after his first half power outburst in 2010 leaving the Braves a hitter short in their quest to win the division.

San Diego Padres: Orlando Hudson has taken advantage of the Padres aggressive attitude on the base paths and already has six stolen bases, putting him well on his way to surpassing his career high of ten. Brad Hawpe has been awful so far with a .129 average and more alarming, 13 strikeouts in 31 at bats. His platoon mate Jorge Cantu has not fared much better, hitting .148 in 27 official trips to the plate.

Pittsburgh Pirates: the lone bright spot so far in Pittsburgh has been Jose Tabata with two home runs and six stolen bases to go with a .302 average. Pedro Alvarez continues to struggle making contact, hitting .196 with 16 whiffs in 46 at bats.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Position Battles – New York Yankees 4th & 5th starters

With the major league baseball season only a couple of weeks away from getting kicked off, there are several key position battles going on that will have a direct impact in fantasy baseball circles. With the retirement of Andy Pettitte, the New York Yankees have two spots at the back of their rotation that there are several candidates competing for. Here’s a look at the top contenders based on fantasy value.

Last night the Yankees trotted out one of their top pitching prospects in left-hander Manny Banuelos to start against the Boston Red Sox, which featured a lineup of all of their normal regulars outside of Mike Cameron in for J.D. Drew. Banuelos who turned 20 earlier this week threw at 92-94 miler per hour, but had some trouble controlling his fastball. He showed a solid changeup at 81 mph that he fanned Kevin Youkilis on. What stood out most though was his poise on the mound as the Red Sox had several scoring opportunities, including loading the bases with one out that he pitched out of.  Banuelos finished the night with 2 2/3 scoreless innings with three walks allowed and two strikeouts. General manager Brian Cashman has said that Banuelos is going to star the year in Double-A but it is not like he has great pitchers blocking him in the fight for the last two rotation spots. If he does begin the year in the minor leagues, he is going to be up at some point this season and could have value in mixed leagues as well as AL only formats.

The remaining pitchers are guys that are AL only value at this point with the hope they can pick up some wins with the Yankees offense behind them. Bartolo Colon has looked surprisingly well in spring so far with a 3.00 ERA in 9 innings pitched with 12 strikeouts.  Veteran Freddy Garcia has a 4.70 ERA through 7 2/3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Sergio Mitre is familiar to the Yankees having pitched there the last two seasons, but has performed better as a relief pitcher than as a starter so I don’t see him winning one of the spots in the rotation. Ivan Nova is the one youngster in the group at 24, and has a 2.25 ERA through 8 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

For AL dynasty and keeper league formats, Banuelos is the guy to own. Colon, Garcia and Nova are plays in AL only one year leagues with the potential to grab a few wins. Keep in mind that if Banuelos starts the year in the minors he will be up at some point and there is a good chance the Yankees trade for a pitcher at some point so if you own the latter three and one of them gets off to a hot start, sell high on them.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Team Preview: Atlanta Braves

There will be several new faces for the Atlanta Braves in 2011, starting with new manager Fredi Gonzalez who takes over for Bobby Cox who retired. Closer Billy Wagner has retired as well leaving the Braves with a void to fill at closer.

The team started off the winter with a fleecing of the Florida Marlins by picking up a 30 home run hitter in Dan Uggla for Omar Infante. The problem is it pushes Martin Prado off of second base for now. Prado could slide over to third base but Chipper Jones is expected to return from ACL surgery so he could be headed to the outfield. The team already picked up the option on shortstop Alex Gonzalez whom they acquired from Toronto toward the end of the 2010 season. First base should be taken over by rookie Freddie Freeman who hit .319 at Triple-A with 18 home runs and 87 RBI. His stay in the Arizona Fall League was cut short due to a sprained thumb but it should not impact him once spring training rolls around. Brian McCann is the catcher with David Ross backing him up.

In the outfield, the Braves are set with Jason Heyward in right field for the next 10 years. In center field, the Braves would love to find somebody to take Nate McLouth’s contract off their hands as he is owed $6.5M in 2011 and the club will likely buy him out for $1.25M in 2012. In left field it looks like it could be Prado with him shifting to third base when Chipper’s injured and Matt Diaz filling in.

The starting rotation for the Braves is locked in with Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson, Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens and Mike Minor. They also have some of the top minor league pitching prospects in baseball close to knocking on the door as well with Arodys Vizcaino, Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado.

In the bullpen, the loss of Billy Wagner will likely be offset with the signing of a veteran closer to a one year contract to let Craig Kimbrel get another year under his belt before he takes over the closer reins full-time in 2012.

2011 fantasy baseball breakout player: Jason Heyward – just starting to scratch the surface.

2011 fantasy baseball bust: Alex Gonzalez – that power is coming back down to earth.

2011 fantasy baseball rookie to watch: Freddie Freeman – he has hit at every level, it still may take a year or two for the power to show at the major league level.

Florida Marlins Winter Moves

With little chance of signing any big name free agents, the Florida Marlins have kicked off the winter season by making several trades over the past few days. Their firs deal was of little fantasy baseball significance with dealing starting pitcher Andrew Miller to the Boston Red Sox for Dustin Richardson.

The Fish then followed up by dealing outfielder Cameron Maybin to the San Diego Padres for two relief pitchers, Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb. It really means no change in value for Cameron Maybin from a fantasy baseball perspective even with the move to a pitcher’s park as most of his value is tied to his stolen bases with a little bit of power.

The move only makes sense for the Marlins by dealing a 23 year-old outfielder with tools is if they plan on making one of the relievers they acquired from the Padres into the team’s closer in 2011. The 24-year-old Webb had a 2.90 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP with a .277 batting average against, stats that are not really closer type material. He only had three saves in the minor leagues as he was tried as a starting pitcher in 97 out of 151 appearances.

The 26-year-old Mujica had a 3.62 ERA with a .93 WHIP last season while averaging more than a strikeout per inning. Mujica tallied 57 saves in the minor leagues with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 355 innings. If you are in a fantasy baseball keeper or dynasty league, Mujica should be your target over Webb as a possible closer for next season.

The other trade that may happen in the upcoming week is Dan Uggla being moved somewhere after he turned down a new contract from the Marlins. That means good news for Chris Coghlan owners as he might get moved from the outfield to second base which gives him a big boost in value. If you pro-rate his numbers from last season to a full season of at bats and give him a few more points of batting average, he would have ranked 10th at second base for the final 2010 fantasy baseball rankings.

2011 Fantasy Baseball: The Toronto Blue Jays

As much as one of the top fantasy baseball stories of 2010 was the breakout of Jose Bautista in Toronto, I think focusing on him alone seems to skew the fact that they were something definitely going on in Toronto last season.

Check out what was the number one ballpark for home runs in all of baseball last year. It was Rogers Centre in Toronto. Some of that can be attributed to the power surge by Bautista, plus the loss of Roy Halladay which gave the Blue Jays a pitcher that allowed more home runs in his place but still, power was up all across the board. Here is a look at the 2009/2010 power numbers by player.

Vernon Wells 15 hr / 31 hr – hit 16 more home runs in 40 less at bats

Lyle Overbay 16 / 20 – hit four more home runs.

Alex Gonzalez – 8 / 17 – hit nine more and that is just with Toronto, does not even count his Atlanta home runs.

Travis Snider – 9 / 14 – hit five more home runs in 57 more at bats.

John Buck 9 (2008) / 20 – hit 11 more home runs in 39 more at bats.

Edwin Encarnacion 13 / 21 – hit eight more home runs in 30 more at bats.

The only person that regressed in terms of power was second basemen Aaron Hill who still hit 26 home runs despite hitting .205. When was the last time you saw that many hitters have a jump in home runs on one team without a change to a new stadium?

Without a doubt, at least some of the responsibility for the Blue Jays increase in power seems to fall on hitting coach Dwayne Murphy who took over in 2010. The team led the major leagues in home runs last year with 257 which set a franchise record.

That fact alone has to leave you somewhat optimistic about Jose Bautista’s power level in 2011 although I think there is obviously some type of regression coming.

Billy Beane & the Oakland A’s

If you are an Oakland A’s fan, you have to think back to the day that the Boston Red Sox reportedly offered Billy Beane the general manager job and he turned it down. I wonder what the state of the Oakland A’s would be in had he left?

While he has been riding on the coat tails of the “Moneyball” fame forever it seems, it has been a struggle the last three seasons with the team finishing under .500 each year and the same looks in store for 2010.

The recent move to cut designated hitter Jack Cust was more than a head scratcher when you consider Cust was the only legitimate 25+ home run guy in the line up outside of a breakout by Kevin Kouzmanoff.

The decision was even more perplexing given that the team announced that Eric Chavez was taking over as the team’s designated hitter. Chavez has not had more than 400 at bats since 2006 as he has encountered a myriad of injuries since that time.

A’s fans will need to wait until fall when first basemen Chris Carter and outfielder Michael Taylor are up from Triple-A to see some real offense it looks like.
