2010 Waiver Wire – Week 22

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for upcoming week 22.

American League:

OF/DH  Marcus Thames – With Lance Berkman on the DL, Thames is seeing all at-bats versus lefty pitching for the Yankees.  Thames is hitting .316 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 117 plate appearances.

RP Chris Sale – Sale is another first round draft pick from this year’s draft that has reached the majors.  Currently pitching in relief for the Chicago White Sox, Sale was drafted as a starter and could be a potential keeper.

3B  Danny Valencia – Minnesota has finally decided to give Valencia the full time job at third after trying a slew of players; even Michael Cuddyer has a few games at third. Valencia is nothing flashy in terms of power since he only has one home run since being called up, but Minnesota has a great line-up and he will see his share of runs scored.  Valencia is hitting .329 on the season.

SP  Ivan Nova – It’s hard not to recommend a starting pitcher for the New York Yankees.  He showed some spunk in his first start for the Bombers going 5+ innings while only giving up two earned runs.  Nova was 12-3 in Triple-A with a 2.86 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 145 innings.

National League:

OF Seth Smith – With Brad Hawpe out of the picture in Colorado, Smith is going to see more at bats for the Rockies as they are only 4.5 games out in the NL West.  Smith who is 27-years-old has 14 home runs with 45 RBI while batting .265 in limited action.

OF Cameron Maybin – Florida called Maybin up again after they moved Cody Ross.  Maybin will see regular playing time in center field for the Marlins for the remainder of the season.  Maybin is 4 for his last 9 plate appearances.

Mixed Leagues:

OF Ryan RaburnMagglio Ordonez is done for the season as the Detroit Tigers have decided to proceed with ankle surgery.  Raburn is hitting .333 with 5 home run over the last 17 games.

SP Bud Norris – Don’t look at Norris’s over numbers.  Norris has not allowed more than 2 runs over his last 3 starts and had 14 strikeouts in one of those outings.  Norris also hasn’t lost a game since July 17th.

OF Chris Denorfia – Denorfia has been also getting regular at bats for the Padres in the month of August.  He is hitting .339 this month and has 9 home runs with 31 RBI.  Denorfia is more know for having some speed with six steals on the season but ride him while he’s hot.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 21

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for upcoming week 21.

American League

OF Ryan Kalish – with Mike Cameron done for the season and Jacoby Ellsbury going back on the disabled list, Kalish is going to see regular playing time in Boston’s outfield. Kalish is hitting over .300 in 15 games with two home runs and eight RBI.

OF Matt Joyce – Joyce has been getting most of the time in Tampa Bay against right-handed pitching and could give your team some power down the stretch though his .216 batting average hurts. He makes a nice fourth or fifth outfielder for your fantasy baseball team.

SP Kevin Millwood – yes, you heard it here first. New manager Buck Showalter has the O’s playing like a real team. Millwood threw eight innings of one-run ball on Tuesday and his next two opponents are the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians. I like those match-ups.

National League

1B  Xavier Nady – with Derrek Lee traded to Atlanta, Nady should see quite a bit of time at first base for the Chicago Cubs

Mixed Leagues

OF  Lorenzo Cain - the trade of Jim Edmonds to Cincinnati opened a regular spot in center field for Cain in Milwaukee. Known for his defense and speed, Cain is a definite option in mixed league formats if your team is in need of stolen bases the rest of the year.

SP Travis Wood – Wood has returned to the Reds rotation with Mike Leake being shifted to the bullpen to limit his innings. Wood is 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA and a.88 WHIP in eight big league starts.

2B Bill Hall – with Dustin Pedroia being placed back on the disabled list in Boston, Hall has some value over the next few weeks. He has hit four home runs and driven in eight over his last 10 games. Qualifies at 2B, 3B or in the outfield and possibly at shortstop if your league has a five game minimum.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 20

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for upcoming week 20.

American League

OF  Gregor Blanco – Acquired from Atlanta as part the Rick Ankiel/Kyle Farnsworth deal, Blanco is playing everyday for Kansas City’s depleted outfield.  Blanco has never hit for power but will grab you a handful to a dozen steals for the rest of the season.

1B  Chris Carter – One of Oakland’s top prospects, Carter was called up earlier this week to give the team some much needed power.  Although he is hitless in his first nine at-bats in the majors, he had 27 home runs with 89 RBI in Triple-A while batting .261

Jarod Saltalamacchia – Salty was traded to the Red Sox at the deadline and with Jason Varitek and now Kevin Cash on the DL, Salty will back-up Victor Martinez for a few weeks and will start when V-Mart plays first base.  Martinez is a free agent at the end of the year so Salty could be the starter next year if you are in a keeper league.

National League

2B/3B  Mike Fontenot – With Edgar Renteria hitting the disabled list, the Giants traded for Fontenot last night.  He has made four starts at short this year along with 33 games at second and 13 at third.  He played 50 games at third last year.  He will be a nice fill in until Renteria comes back and then will likely be a super utility guy after that.  He could give you some power over the next couple of weeks as he hit nine home runs each of the last two years in limited at bats.

2B/3B/SS/OF  Jamey Carroll – another super utility guy for the Dodgers having played 40 games at second, 10 at third, 45 at short and five in the outfield.  Playing regularly all over the field, Carroll is hitting .276 with 40 runs scored and seven stolen bases and will see extended playing time with Rafael Furcal on the disabled list.

Mixed Leagues

SP  Jeremy Hellickson – The Rays do not seem to be too worried even though then placed 40% of their starting rotation on the disabled list this week with shoulder problems.  Hellickson has made two starts this season and has gone 14 innings with 13 strikeouts and a 1.28 ERA.  He’s going to be starting for at least the next two weeks and is a great keeper for next year as well.

2B/3B/SS/OF  Jerry Hairston – Hairston has been playing regularly for the Padres all over the field.  He has 37 games at second, two games at third, 60 at shortstop and 11 in the outfield.  Hairston has shown some nice power this year hitting his 10th home run last night and has eight steals on the year.

You can also find additional players to consider in the fantasy baseball buy or sell report for week 19.

Waiver Wire – Week 19

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for upcoming week 19.

American League:

OF – Shelley Duncan:   With Austin Kearns being dealt to the New York Yankees at the trade deadline and Travis Hafner on the disabled list with a shoulder ailment, Duncan has been seeing regular playing time.  He has hit safely in six of his last eight games and has 6 home runs with 20 RBI on the season.

RP – Mike Gonzalez:  Gonzalez has only given up one run in his last nine innings of work with the Orioles.  Gonzalez was brought in prior to the season to be the teams’ closer before suffering injuries.  He will reclaim closer duties shortly as Alfredo Simon has not looked solid in that role.

1B – Kila Ka’aihue:  He has been a top prospects for the Kansas City Royals for a number of years now.  With Jose Guillen designated for assignment this afternoon, he is finally going to be given some playing time.  A great source of power as he hit 24 home runs in AAA this season.

OF – Felix Pie:  Pie is getting a chance to play regularly in Baltimore since coming off the DL and has hits in his last four games.  He’s a great 4th or 5th outfielder especially if he is able to show off his speed.  Everyone is currently playing for a job for next year with Buck Showalter in town.

National League:

RP – Aaron Heilman:  Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson has stated Heilman will see a majority of save opportunities now that Chad Qualls was traded.

SS – Paul Janish:  With Orlando Cabrera on the disabled list, Janish is playing everyday at shortstop until the O-Dog is back.  Janish is a lite hitter but not a player who is going to hurt you statistically if you need a replacement.

1B – Mike Sweeney:  The Phillies quietly picked up Sweeney in a trade from Seattle yesterday.  Ross Gload is still in the mix and Sweeney just came off the DL himself with back spasms but the Phillies are on record as saying that Sweeney will be given the majority of the playing time at first base until Ryan Howard returns from the DL with an ankle injury.

SP – Mike Minor:  Atlanta is going to call up the 2009 first round pick with Kris Medlen now done for the year with the likelihood that he will need Tommy John surgery.  Minor has a 3.41 ERA, 1.15 WHIP with 144 strikeouts over 118 minor league innings.  I would prefer to see how he does in his first start or two before making him a part of your regular fantasy baseball rotation.

Mixed:

C – J.P. Arencibia:  Toronto placed John Buck on the DL with a hand laceration.  Arencibia is going to get a chance to play over the next two weeks and has unreal power for a catcher hitting 31 home runs in the minor leagues this year.

RP – Chris Perez:  Perez is now the closer for the Indians with Kerry Wood now in Pinstripes.  I like him the best out of the other closers listed earlier.

1B – Brett Wallace:  Wallace has been traded twice in as many seasons and is not the regular first baseman for the Astros.  Wallace was hitting .301 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI for Toronto’s AAA team in Las Vegas.

3B - Chris Johnson:  Johnson has been given the majority of the playing for the Houston Astros at third base since the All-Star break, while Pedro Feliz has only played in three games since the break.  Johnson has responded well and currently has five home runs and 28 RBI with a .349 batting average.

OF – Peter Bourjos:  Speed, speed and more speed.  Did I mention he is fast? Definitely a guy to target as the new center fielder for the Los Angeles Angels.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 18

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for week 18.

American League:

OF – Travis Snider:  Remember him?  Snider has not played since mid-May but is expected to be activated this weekend and is going to help out at both corner outfield spots when he returns.  Snider is hitting .316 with four home runs and 16 RBI over his last 10 rehab games.

2B – Alexi Casilla – the injury to Orlando Hudson makes Casilla relevant for a few weeks in Minnesota. If your team is searching for stolen bases, he might be able to swipe a couple for you.

SP – Zach Britton:  Britton was going to be recalled from Triple-A to start Saturday but as of Thursday morning those plans have changed.  Britton has made five starts since being promoted to Triple-A with a 2.28 ERA.  The Orioles will likely call up the youngster prior to September to make a spot start.  He’s a guy I want on my bench until he is recalled.  One of the Oriole rookie pitchers has to work out.

OF – Mitch Moreland:  called up by the Texas Rangers with Ian Kinsler going on the disabled list, Moreland will see time at first base and in the outfield. Moreland was hitting .289 in Triple-A with 12 home runs and 65 RBI in 353 at bats with two stolen bases.

3B – Josh Bell: the trade of Miguel Tejada to San Diego opens the door for Bell to get extended playing time the rest of the season. Bell was hitting .278 in Triple-A for the season with 13 home runs and 50 RBI before being recalled Thursday. With a 23 walk to 78 strikeout ratio, it is best to temper expectation on his performance.

National League:

OF – Logan Morrison:  Due to another freak post game celebration, Chris Coghlan will be out for at least 6 weeks.  Morrison was hitting .307 with six homer runs and 45 RBI before being recalled and will be a platoon partner with Emilio Bonifacio for the Marlins.

RP – Joel Hanrahan:  If the Pirates do trade Octavio Dotel, Hanrahan would split closer duties with Evan Meek.  Hanrahan does have more experience in the closer role as he closed games when he was with the Nationals in 2008 and 2009.  In 44 2/3 innings of work this year, Hanrahan has 60 K’s vs. 14 walks with a 3.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.

Mixed Leagues:

OF – Luke Scott:  Since returning from the disabled list ten days ago, Scott has hit over .400 with five home runs and 11 RBI.  With 9 games played at first base this season, he might have additional roster eligibility depending on your league rules.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 17

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for week 17.

American League only:

2B – Scott Sizemore – I’m sure many AL and mixed league owners drafted this guy hoping to make a splash with him.  After hitting just .206 to begin the year, the Tigers sent him back down to Triple-A.  He’s been recalled to help out at second and possible third base while Brandon Inge is out with a broken finger.  In 167 at-bats in Triple-A, Sizemore was hitting .329 with 19 RBI and 32 runs scored.  He deserves a bench spot on your AL only team if he’s available if he is still available on waivers. He got the start on Thursday and went 0-for4 while hitting sixth at third base.

RP / SP – Brian Duensing – Duensing is going to take the rotation spot for Nick Blackburn in Minnesota who has just been dreadful this season. Duensing has only pitched in relief this season but made nine starts last season for the Twins.  In 2010, he has pitched 43 innings with a 3-1 record and a 1.67 ERA.  He pitched four innings in his last relief appearance to stretch him out.  I believe he may only go five to maybe six innings in his first start tomorrow against Baltimore.  His next start after that is against Kansas City.

National League only:

C – Erik Kratz – This is a true feel good story. If you were watching the Triple A All-Star game like I was last week, you saw that he was pulled from the game because he was being called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  What make this such a great story is that he is a 30-year-old rookie. He was hitting .296 with 9 HR and 37 RBI before being recalled and the plan was for him to platoon with Ryan Doumit. With Doumit just recently going on the disabled list, Kratz should see the majority of action over the next few weeks.

OF – John Jay – Jay is currently in a platoon situation with Randy Winn while Ryan Ludwick is on the disabled list but that may change shortly since he’s hitting .378 with three home runs, 11 RBI and 18 runs scored over 82 AB
this season. He could see a boost in playing time if he is moved in a trade as well as St. Louis does not have really any top level minor league prospects at this point.

12/15 Team Mixed League:

OF – Matt Diaz – Disregard his overall numbers and just pay attention to what he has been doing since he has come back from injury. He is currently hitting .400 in the month of July with four home runs and 11 RBI in 40 at bats. He might not get the start every game, but he is a good guy to grab if you need some help with your team batting average.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 16

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire for week 16.

American League only:

SS – Yunel Escobar – The trade from Atlanta to the  Blue Jays can only help Escobar after hitting a miserable .237 in zero home runs and only 19 RBI.  Last year, Escobar hit .299 with 14 home runs and 76 RBI and hit .321 after the All-Star break.

National League only:

SS – Alex Gonzalez – The other side of the Escobar trade that took place on Wednesday.  Gonzalez comes to the Braves after having a career first-half while with Toronto, hitting 17 home runs and 50 RBI with a .257 average.  He’ll fill a hole at shortstop in the real world, but to think he’ll repeat those power number during the second half is  unrealistic. Gonzalez is hitting seventh in Atlanta’s line up tonight.

SP – James McDonald – McDonald is set to replace John Ely in the Los Angeles Dodgers rotation. You can read more about him here.

RP – Ernesto Frieri – just called up by the San Diego Padres, this is a guy to consider adding, especially if you league has specific relief pitcher designations for your rosters. Frieri who will turn 25 next week, had 37 2/3 innings in Triple-A with 49 strikeouts and a 1.43 ERA to go along with 17 saves. He is likely to take the spot of Mike Adams in the bullpen with Adams headed to the disabled list.

1B – Brad Eldred – called up by the Colorado Rockies with Todd Helton going on the disabled list, Eldred will serve as the right-handed hitting platoon mate to Jason Giambi giving him more value in leagues that have daily transactions. Eldred was hitting .267 with 22 home runs and 64 RBI in 266 at bats in Triple-A before being called up.

12/15 Team Mixed League:

SP – Travis Wood – How can I not recommend the Cincinnati lefty after pitching 8 2/3 perfect innings in his last outing before the All-Star break against Roy Halladay?  He only has three major league starts so far with three no decisions, but has pitched 20 2/3 innings with 17 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.18 to go with a .68 WHIP.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 15

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 15.

American League only:

2B/SS/3B – Jayson Nix – since being claimed off of waivers by the Cleveland Indians, Nix has been on a hot streak. Nix has boosted his overall average to .230 with five home runs and eight RBI since coming to Cleveland. He is a nice middle infield play in mixed leagues if he continues to hit. Qualifies at second base but may also qualify at shortstop (15 games in 2009) and third base (16 games in 2010) depending on your league requirements.

2B / OF – Eric Patterson – Patterson is nothing flashy, but I expect him to play at least two or three days a week while Dustin Pedroia is injured.  I feel his main asset is his speed, but if he can get you a few homers and runs, then even better. He has seven games at second base this season and played five games there last year so he may or may not yet be eligible to play thee in your fantasy baseball league depending on your league requirements.

OF – Michael Brantley – Brantley was called up a few days ago and should see extensive playing time while Shin-Soo Choo is on the disabled list. In 28 major league games in 2009 Brantley hit .313 with 11 RBI with 4 SB’s and had 46 steals in Triple-A in 2009.  After starting 2010 in the majors, Brantley was sent down in mid April after being unable to maintain a .200 average.  While at Triple-A, Brantley hit .319 with 26 RBI and 11 steals.  Brantley is still struggling to hit with his average now under .150.  If you have a spot on your bench for him until he can figure things out, he’s worth the gamble.

RP – Matt Thornton – Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen made things interesting by having Thornton close out Sunday’s game with Bobby Jenks back from his bereavement leave.  Guillen had Jenks then pitch in the 8th inning in Monday’s game with a seven run lead.    Although Jenks got the save on Tuesday, Thornton should still continue to get save chances from time to time.  Also keep on eye on J.J. Putz who could see some save opportunities if one of the three is moved at the trade deadline.

National League only:

3B – Greg Dobbs – Dobbs was recently called up from Triple-A will serve as the third basemen in Philadelphia while Placido Polanco is on the disabled list. Dobbs has a little bit of power and is worth a short-term pick up in the meantime.

C – Justin Thole – Thole is seeing extended action behind the plate for the New York Mets. The team could be showcasing him for a trade as his name has come up in several rumors. If you have to start two catchers in your league, Thole is not going to hurt you in any category.

12/15 Team Mixed League:

OF – Dexter Fowler – the best thing to happen to Fowler was to be sent down to Triple-A which served as a reality check. There, Fowler hit 340 in 106 at bats with two home runs and 13 RBI. Colorado has four outfielders they can rotate so I can see Fowler playing at least four times per week. With his speed and if he continues to bat at the top of the order, Fowler is a great player to spot start depending on how your league transaction work.

SP - Marc Rzepczynski – Rzepczynski was projected as a starter for the Toronto Blue Jays before breaking his finger at the end of spring training. He may have some control issues but I think he has promise as a back end of the rotation guy. In his first start of the season this week against Minnesota, he worked 5 /23 innings with four runs allowed and seven strikeouts.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 14

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 14.

American League only:

1B / OF Matt LaPorta – the trade of Russell Branyan allowed Cleveland to install LaPorta at first base and he has responded by homering in three straight games. LaPorta was hitting .362 in 69 at bats in Triple-A with five home runs and 16 RBI.

C – Bengie Molina- just traded to the Texas Rangers, Molina offers a decent option at catcher in AL only leagues. His power numbers are off from last season but that should be no surprise for a 36-year-old catcher.  The move to Texas should give him a little boost with the new home ballpark.

C – Jason Varitek – with Victor Martinez on the disabled list, Varitek becomes an AL only option over the next two weeks, although Martinez is expected back the first day he is eligible to come off the disabled list.

3B – Josh Bell - the Baltimore Orioles called up prospect Bell from Triple-A where he was hitting .266 in 286 at bats with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. He still has a lot of work to do on his plate discipline with 18 walks and 75 strikeouts. It sounds like it may be only a short time that Bell spends in the major leagues due to some injuries the Orioles are currently facing, but he is someone to keep an eye on in keeper leagues.

National League only:

SP – Barry Enright – Enright was called up from Double-A by the Arizona Diamondbacks where he was 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings.  He was holding hitters to a .238 average with nine home runs allowed on the season. Keeper league owners should keep in mind that he is 24 years old and he was repeating Double-A this season after making 27 starts there last year.

SP – Travis Wood – Wood was called up by the Cincinnati Reds and got the start Thursday against the Chicago Cubs and worked seven innings, allowing two hits and two runs with four strikeouts. With Edison Volquez and Homer Bailey close to returning for the Reds, Wood’s stay in the rotation is likely a short one. In Triple-A, Wood had a 3.12 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 98 innings while holding hitters to a .231 average.

1B  – Travis Ishikawa – the trade of Bengie Molina to Texas could give Ishikawa some more time at first base with Buster Posey at catcher, although on Thursday, Aubrey Huff got the call at first base and Pat Burrell was out in left field

SS – Wilson Valdez – the injury to Chase Utley opens a spot for Valdez who did a decent job filling in for Jimmy Rollins when he was on the disabled list. Valdez is hitting .261 with four home runs and 20 RBI after going deep on Thursday night.

12/15 Team Mixed League:

2B / OF – Sean Rodriguez – after sporadic playing time the first two months of the season in Tampa Bay, Rodriguez was on fire in June, hitting .295 with four home runs, 17 RBI and six stolen bases.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 13

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 13.

American League only:

3B – Jarrett Hoffpauir has taken over as the starting third basemen in Toronto with the demotion of Edwin Encarnacion. Hoffpauir was hitting .328 in 235 at bats with 9 home runs and 43 RBI to go with three stolen bases. His plate discipline means he should be able to carry over a decent batting average in the majors, after walking 21 times and striking out in only 15 at bats in Triple-A.

SP – Erik Bedard – if Bedard is still on the waiver wire, it looks like he is close to returning to action in the major leagues with a tentative start the week of July 5th. He has had one rehab start so far, going 2 2/3 innings, with four hits allowed and three strikeouts in the Rookie Arizona League.

C – Wilson Ramos – if you are looking for a catcher in a dynasty league, Ramos is a decent option since he is most likely to be the center piece of any trade involving the Minnesota Twins with Joe Mauer signed to a long term contract. He has had a rough year at Triple-A, hitting .218 in 188 at bats with four home runs and 18 RBI, compared to hitting .317 in 2009 with 7 home runs and 35 RBI in 224 at bats in Double-A.

National League only:

SP – Edison Volquez – much like Bedard in the American League, Volquez should be returning to the major leagues around the same time for the Cincinnati Reds. Volquez has worked 13 innings on rehab with one run allowed on six hits with eight strikeouts.

C – Jason Castro – one of the minor league call ups by the Houston Astros last weekend, Castro has started each of the Astros games this week and collected his first home run off of Matt Cain today. Castro hit .265 in Triple-A with four home runs and 26 RBI in 211 at bats.

3B  – Chris Johnson – Johnson was promoted along with Castro and will see the majority of starts at 3B going forward for the Astros. He has hit sixth in the line up in both of his starts but was out of the line up on Thursday. Johnson hit .329 in 149 at bats in Triple-A with eight home runs and 33 RBI.

SP - Josh Banks – with Felipe Paulino headed to the disabled list for the Houston Astros, Banks will have a chance to start this Saturday against Texas. Banks was 8-5 with a 2.97 ERA in 97 innings with 24 walks and 34 strikeouts. Only if you are in a deep 15-20 team NL only league would you want to take a chance on him.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 12

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 12.

American League only:

OF – Conor Jackson should give a boost to the Oakland A’s offense after being traded from Arizona earlier this week. Jackson slots in nicely as the number three hitter and should be able to put up a decent amount of RBI the rest of the season.

SP – Felix Doubront got the start for the Boston Red Sox on Friday and went five innings, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts. Between 12 starts at Double-A and Triple-A, Doubront was 6-1 with a 2.11 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings while allowing zero home runs. He may get one more start before Daisuke Matsuzaka returns from the disabled list.

3B – Dayan Viciedo got called up by the Chicago White Sox. I wrote about him earlier this week in the minor league report. He did not play on Friday as veteran Omar Vizquel started at third base. Since Chicago has not thrown in the towel officially yet on the season, I am not sure how much time he is going to see, especially with some holes still in his swing.

OF – Daniel Nava is getting time in the Boston outfield thanks to a lot of injuries. Nava is hitting .381 in 21 at bats with a home run and six RBI. He could definitely give a boost to your teams batting average with a career minor league batting average of .342.

National League only:

3B – Pedro Alvarez was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates this week moved into the starting line up hitting sixth. He should offer some power and RBI with a low batting average the rest of the way.

2B – The injury to shortstop Troy Tulowitzki opens a hole at second base for Jonathan Herrera. This would have been a spot for Eric Young Jr. were he also not injured. Herrera was hitting .286 with a home run and 11 RBI in 168 at bats in Triple-A with two steals. The Colorado Rockies also recalled shortstop Chris Nelson from Triple-A. Nelson, the ninth overall pick back in the 2004 draft, was hitting .311 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 132 at bats. Both he and Herrera could see time in the infield with Clint Barmes swinging back and forth between shortstop and second base.

C – Jonathan Lucroy has taken over the starting catcher role from George Kottaras in Milwaukee. Lucroy is hitting .314 in 35 at bats with stolen bases on the year. Between two levels in the minor leagues this season, he hit .311 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 122 at bats.

OF – Gerardo Parra figures to be the winner in the outfield in Arizona with Conor Jackson getting traded this week. His numbers have not been that great with sporadic playing time this season, but there is no reason he cannot post similar numbers to what he did last year the rest of the way in 2010.

RP – I wrote about Sam Demel earlier this week in the closer report. He could be in the mix for saves at some point this season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

12 /15 mixed league:

OF – Tyler Colvin seems on the cusp of turning into a full-time player and with the numbers he has put up in limited at bats, there is no reason the Chicago Cubs should not throw him out there every day and let him see what he can do.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 11

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 11.

American League only:

1B – Mike Carp – Carp was called up by the Seattle Mariners at the beginning of the week and has moved into the starting line up at first base as the Mariners look to add some juice to their offense. Carp was hitting .250 in Triple-A with 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 184 at bats before being recalled.

SS – Omar Vizquel – Vizquel has moved into the starting line up for the Chicago White Sox thanks to the injury to Mark Teahen. He should score a few runs and steal a couple of bases during his time as a full-time starter. He hit second Thursday night and delivered his first home run of the season.

SP – Jake Arrieta – I wrote about Arrieta earlier in the minor league report this week.  His control issues make him a risky play in a mixed league format, especially starting against American League East teams, but in an AL format, his strikeouts give him some value going forward.

OF – Ryan Raburn – with Magglio Ordonez sidelined with an oblique injury, Raburn could see some additional at bats over the next week or two. His numbers have been less than stellar this season with a .179 batting average and no home runs in 78 at bats, but he does have some thump in his bat.

National League only:

OF – Roger Bernadina - Bernadina seems to have found a home in right field for the Washington Nationals. He does not have any standout skills, but he has been quietly consistent since moving into a starting role. If you project his stats out over 500+ at bats, his line reads 10 home runs, 80 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

12 /15 mixed league:

OF – Jose Tabata – with so few stolen base options available on the waiver wire at this time of the season, a player that gets called up from the minor leagues with speed immediately becomes a top target for free agent budgets. Hitting lead off in Pittsburgh, Tabata should be able to score a decent amount of runs and could steal 15-20 bases over the course of the remainder of the season.

OF – Mike Stanton – after tearing up Double-A pitching Stanton debuted in the Florida Marlins line up this week, hitting seventh and playing in right field. Definitely worth picking up if you need home runs and can support what is to be an expected lower batting average with his propensity for striking out.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 10

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 10.

American League only:

3B – Danny Valencia – Valencia was called up by the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday and will see time at third base. His stay could be a short one if the team is looking for a hitter with Michael Cuddyer out a few days on bereavement leave, or his stay could be longer if the Twins actually give him at bats and a chance to win the job from Nick Punto. Valencia was hitting .292 with no home runs and 24 RBI on 185 at bats with two stolen bases. His career minor league average is .299 and he hit 14 home runs between two levels last year so he is not a light hitter by any means, but for some reason the home runs have not been there this year.

SP – Tommy Hunter – Hunter is ready to return to the Texas Rangers and with Derek Holland going on the disabled list, there is a spot open for him in the rotation to make a couple of starts. Hunter has a 4.05 ERA in six starts in Triple-A this year with a 1.46 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings.

National League only:

SP – Carlos Monasterios - it has been quite a journey for Monasterios who just last season was repeating High-A in the minor leagues while pitching mostly in relief at the age of 23. He has already been with several organizations, starting with the New York Yankees before being traded to Philadelphia in the Bobby Abreu deal back in 2006. He was selected by the New York Mets in the Rule V Draft this past off season but then traded to the Dodgers where he seems to have found a home so far.  He has been filling in for Vicente Padilla on the disabled list so there is no guarantee he will stay in the rotation, but for now the results make him worthy of a claim if he is still a free agent. Monasterios has a 1.87 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through 33 2/3 innings with 17 strikeouts.

OF - Xavier Nady – with rumors of Derrek Lee possibly being on the trade block in Chicago, the Cubs are going to need a first basemen if he is moved. The most likely scenario is that Nady or even someone like Alfonso Soriano is moved to first base. If Soriano is moved, that would open up additional at bats for Nady or Tyler Colvin.

12 /15 mixed league:

RP – John Axford – as long as Axford keeps getting the job done, it looks like he will remain in the closer role.He has picked up three saves and a win in his last four appearances and has a 2.79 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP. Trevor Hoffman was bombed in his last outing and Carlos Villanueva has allowed three runs in his last 2/3 of an inning so there is no else stepping forward in the bullpen.

3B – Mike Lowell – several weeks ago it looked like Lowell was going to get additional time with David Ortiz struggling in Boston. Since then Big Papi has been on fire and Lowell has been relegated to a bench role. With injuries and players under performing, teams are now starting to assess trade possibilities. There is a good chance that Lowell could be on the move somewhere in the next month and would turn into a full-time player.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 9

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 9.

American League only:

SP – Chris Tillman – I wrote about Tillman in the minor league report earlier this week. To me he is strictly an AL only play until he proves he can pitch in the major leagues the second time around. Until he is able to string together four or five good starts in a row, he should remain benched in mixed league formats.

2B / SS – Maicer Izturis – takes over at third base for the Los Angeles Angels with Brandon Wood going on the disabled list and has a good chance to keep the job for the rest of the season in that role. He has always put up solid numbers in limited at bats, as he can hit for average and steal a few bases as well.

National League only:

SP – P.J. Walters - Walters worked five shutout innings in his start Thursday night while striking out four in his 2010 major league debut. With Brad Penny on the disabled list and Kyle Lohse now out of action for the next two months, Walters will get a a chance in the rotation over the next several weeks.

SP – Sam LeCure – LeCure makes his major league debut on Friday against the Houston Astros, replacing Homer Bailey in the rotation. LeCure had a 2.55 ERA in 9 starts in Triple-A with a 1.20 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 60 innings. His career minor league numbers stand at a 3.67 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.

12 /15 mixed league:

SP – Hisanori Takahashi – I had Takahashi in the NL only section last week, but after two stellar starts against top offenses in the Yankees and the Phillies, it is time to start using him in mixes leagues. Averaging more than a strikeout an inning on the season, Takahashi currently has a 2.13 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 38 innings on the year.

RP – Will Ohman – it looks like Ohman will step into the role as the Baltimore closer with Alfredo Simon going on the disabled list and Mike Gonzalez still far away from returning to action after experiencing a setback in his rehab.   Ohman has only three saves in 349 games in 10 chances so there is no guarantee of success for him, especially after serving as a lefty specialist.

RP – Frank Mata – if you don’t believe in Ohman, than Mata is a fall back option. Mata was recalled from Triple-A after serving as closer there, racking up eight saves in 19 1/3 innings with 14 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA. At age 26, his numbers have not been too impressive in the minors, with career numbers of a 4.08 ERA and a 1.437 WHIP.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 8

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 8.

American League only:

OF – Coco Crisp – Crisp comes off the disabled list Friday and immediately moves into the lead off spot in the batting order. Definitely a guy to grab in AL only leagues with the potential to steal 20 bases over the remainder of the season.

OF – Trevor Crowe - Crowe took over in the Cleveland outfield when Grady Sizemore was placed on the disabled list. He doesn’t offer much in the way of average or power, but he brings some speed to the table so if your team is short on steals, he is someone to target. Crowe was hitting .244 in 199 at bats with 13 RBI and six stolen bases at Triple-A.

SS – Jason Donald – Donald takes over at shortstop for Cleveland Indians for the next two months of the season with Asdrubal Cabrera going on the disabled list. Donald was hitting .277 with two home runs, 17 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 137 at bats with the Columbus Clippers.

SS - Trevor Plouffe – Plouffe was called up by the Minnesota Twins with J.J. hardy still out of action and is starting and hitting eight against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight. Plouffe, a first round pick back in the 2004 draft, was hitting .303 with four home runs and 21 RBI in 152 at bats in Triple-A

National League only:

RP / SP – Hisanori Takahashi – with members in the New York Mets rotation dropping like flies, Takahashi had his first start of the season Friday night against the New York Yankees, which is no easy task. Takahashi passed the test with flying colors, tossing six shutout innings with five strikeouts in a no decision.

C – Jonathan Lucroy – Lucroy got the call up from Triple-A this week with Gregg Zaun going on the disabled list. Lucroy was hitting .311 between two levels in the with two home runs and 16 RBI in 122 at bats.

OF – Eric Hinske – various injuries and lack of performance in the Atlanta Braves outfield has given Hinske a permanent role the last seven games. Hinske has collected 11 hits in those contests to go along with tow home runs and five RBI.

12 /15 mixed league:

RP – Carlos Villanueva – the new interim closer of the Milwaukee Brewers as Trevor Hoffman works on his mechanics, Villanueva picked up a save Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

C - Francisco Cervelli – if you are in a deep league, Cervelli is an option if you have to start two catchers with Jorge Posada going on the disabled list this week. Cervelli is hitting .357 on the season for the New York Yankees with 17 RBI in 70 at bats.

RP – Daniel Bard – if you are desperate for saves and have the bench space, just on the off chance the Boston Red Sox stay out of the playoff race making it more likely that Jonathan Papelbon gets moved at the trade deadline.

2B - Freddy Sanchez – Sanchez returned to the San Francisco Giants line up after starting the year on the disabled list and should hit second for the foreseeable future, making him a good choice to make up ground in rounds scored and to help support your team batting average.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 7

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 7.

American League only:

1B – Juan Miranda - Miranda will give the New York Yankees a left-handed hitter off the Nick Johnson on the disabled list. Miranda was hitting .260 in 96 at bats in Triple-A with five home runs and 15 RBI.

2B – Joaquin Arias – Arias returns from the disabled list this weekend for the Texas Rangers, although he has a lot less value now than Ian Kinsler is back and healthy.

2B – Mark Grudzielanek – not a sexy name by any means, but with Luis Valbuena struggling in Cleveland, Grudzielanek can help give a boost to your team batting average.

UT – Jack Cust – at some point Jack Cust is going to be back up with the Oakland A’s. You can get ahead of your league mates by claiming him now if you have room on your bench. Cust is hitting .286 in 105 at bats with four home runs and 19 RBI.

National League only:

RP - Scott Mathieson - if you are looking for a sleeper candidates in saves. Mathieson could be your guy. With Brad Lidge hurting and Ryan Madson on the disabled list, Mathieson could be thrust into the Philadelphia bullpen picture sooner rather than later. Mathieson has five saves in Triple-A with a 0.54 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

SP – John Ely – if Ely is still somehow out there on the waiver wire, he is definitely worth grabbing. Ely has a 3.86 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in three starts with 17 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. Ely’s career minor league numbers show him with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.254 WHIP with 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

12 /15 mixed league:

SP – Derek Holland – I wrote about him in Rising / Falling in week 6.

SP – Kris Medlen – with Jair Jurrjens re-injuring his hamstring, Medlen should remain in the rotation for the next four weeks. He will get a start next week against the New York Mets and will have the opportunity to use the next few weeks to showcase himself as a better starting pitcher option to the Atlanta Braves than Kenshin Kawakami.

OF – Fred Lewis – he still strikes out way too much for a lead off hitter with little power, but as long as he is hot and hitting for average it is worth riding him for as long as you can. Lewis is hitting .296 with two home runs 13 RBI and three stolen bases on the season.

OF – Corey Patterson – he is bound to score runs hitting lead off for the Baltimore Orioles. His batting average will hurt your team, but if you pick him up, you are hoping for a couple of home runs and some stolen bases.

OF – Brennan Boesch – has been sitting against left-handed pitching, but his RBI rate per at bat makes him an intriguing option going forward, especially since Jim Leyland has been giving him props on a regular basis based on his performance.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 6

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 6.

American League only:

C – Frank Cervelli – with the various New York Yankees falling down to injury, Cervelli is getting some time behind the plate with Jorge Posada moving over to designated hitter. Cervelli is hitting .345 over the last two weeks with four runs scored and four RBI.

C – Jason Varitek – who would have guessed that at this point of the season that Varitek would have more home runs than starting catcher Victor Martinez? Varitek is seeing minimal time, but has flashed power in his small sample of at bats. Varitek has two home runs and six RBI in 16 at bats the past 14 days.

C – Wilson Ramos – has short term value with Joe Mauer sidelined due to injury. Ramos, one of the top prospects in the Minnesota Twins organization has hit .400 in 20 at bats since being recalled from Triple-A.

1B – Kila Ka’aihue – recently called up by the Kansas City Royals, with Ka’aihue, it is always a question of how many at bats the Royals are going to give him. Despite putting up good minor league numbers in years past, the Royals have never fully commuted to him 100% in giving him an opportunity. Ka’aihue was hitting .304 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in 79 at bats before his promotion.

SS – Mike Aviles – Aviles was the odd man out in the Royals infield when spring training ended despite putting up stellar stats. Now he has been recalled and will have the chance to grab the starting job from Yuniesky Betancourt. Aviles was hitting .271 with a home run and eight RBI in Triple-A.

National League only:

SS - Starlin Castro - despite all the talk by Chicago Cubs management about keeping Castro in the minor leagues, Castro was just called up and immediately made an impact in his first game, going 2-for-5 with a home run and six RBI. His promotion moves Ryan Theriot to second base with Jeff Baker and Mike Fontenot going to the bench.

1B/OF - Steve Pearce – with Jeff Clement struggling at first base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pearce was recalled and could see some spot starts. He has started one of three games since the promotion and is 0-for-5. In his career, he has shown to be nothing more than a Quad-A player, someone that performs well in Triple-A but not in the major leagues so he is stuck somewhere in the middle.

RP – Manuel Corpas – looks to have moved ahead of Franklin Morales in the Colorado Rockies bullpen and should see some save opportunities until Huston Street returns to action. Corpas has a 1.66 ERA on the season with a .88 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

SS – Ryan Rohlinger – could see a few starts at shortstop for the San Francisco Giants with Edgar Renteria going on the disabled list and Freddy Sanchez still out of action. Rohlinger was hitting .333 with two home runs and 13 RBI in Triple-A in 87 at bats.

12 /15 mixed league:

Utility – Jim Thome – I wrote about him in Rising / Falling in week 5.

RP – Alfredo Simon – has converted all three save opportunities and is still unscored upon in five innings.

SP – Wade LeBlanc – gets two starts in week 6 against San Francisco and the LA Dodgers. LeBlanc has a 1.16 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in four starts with 20 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 4

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire in week 4.

American League only:

1B – Justin Smoak – got the call up from Triple-A this week by the Texas Rangers replacing Chris Davis. Smoak has hit 6th in the line up and is currently 0 for 5 with three walks and one strikeouts.

2B – Adam Rosales – Rosales takes over at second base for the Oakland A’s with Mark Ellis going on the disabled list. Rosales is hitting .244 on the season with one home run and seven RBI. Played 57 games at third base in 2009 and 11 games at first base so if your league has a 10 game limit, he would currently qualify at three positions. If the limit is 20 games, then he can only be used at first base.

SS – Matt Tuiasosopo – currently filling in for Jack Wilson at shortstop for the Seattle Mariners. Although the x-rays on Wilson’s thumb did not show a fracture, Tuiasosopo could be good insurance just in case Wilson tweaks it again when he comes back.

C - John Jaso – Jaso will see a few at bats each week as the back up catcher in Tampa Bay with Kelly Shoppach sidelined for four weeks. Jason has a career minor league batting average of .290 with good plate discipline so he should not harm your team’s batting average like most second catchers would.

OF – Brennan Boesch – getting the start in the outfield for the Detroit Tigers with Carlos Guillen going on the disabled list this week. Boesch hit .275 with 28 home runs and 11 stolen bases in Double-A last season.

OF – Austin Kearns - with little production from the Cleveland outfield this season, Austin Kearns has been getting more time in the last two weeks. Kearns is hitting .355 with four RBI and a stolen base on the season.

OF – Darnell McDonald – filling in for Jacoby Ellsbury / Mike Cameron, McDonald is hitting .417 in 12 at bats with two home runs and four RBI.

National League only:

1B - Ike Davis – probably owned in almost every NL only league but just in case he isn’t. Should see the majority of starts until Daniel Murphy returns and even then he has a good chance of staying on as the starter throughout the end of the season. Seems to have give the New York Mets a spark as the team has won 5 of 6 games since his promotion from Triple-A. Currently hitting .350 in 20 at bats with one home run and two RBI.

OF – Brett Carroll – has shown a little bit of power and is getting some extra at bats in Florida with Chris Coghlan off to a slow start. Carroll is hitting .350 in 20 at bats with two home runs and four RBI.

OF – Gerardo Parra – will see the majority of at bats in the outfield for Arizona while Conor Jackson is on the disabled list.

SP – Nelson Figueroa – should get another start or two with J.A. Happ on the disabled list. Figueroa got the start on Saturday and allowed two runs in five innings with four strikeouts.

12 /15 mixed league:

1B – Justin Smoak and Ike Davis - see above

SP – Barry Zito – Zito picked up his third win of the season on Saturday and is off to a great start, currently 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP ratio. Batters are only hitting .161 against him.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 3

Here is a look at some potential players to target in your fantasy baseball league that might be out there on the waiver wire.

12 /15 mixed league:

RP - Jim Johnson – takes over as closer in Baltimore with Mike Gonzalez headed to the disabled list.

RP – Kevin Gregg – has assumed the closer role in Toronto from Jason Frasor.

RP - Fernando Rodney – Brian Fuentes is supposed to be back from the disabled list this week  but Rodney has shown he can do the job and could get some save opportunities down the line.

American League only:

OF - Fred Lewis - traded over from the San Francisco Giants, he should see some at bats in a reserve outfielder role.

OF - Lou Montanez – with Felix Pie headed to the disabled list and Nolan Reimold not an every day player due to injuries, Montanez should get some starts in the outfield the next two weeks.

2B - Mike McCoy – getting some time at second base for Toronto with Aaron Hill on the disabled list.

SP - Doug Fister – control pitcher for the Seattle Mariners that allows hitters to put the ball in play and gets ground ball outs. With his home stadium and excellent defensive support, he has some value despite the lack of strikeouts.

National League only:

OF – Justin Maxwell – Maxwell had the chance to win the right field job in spring training after Elijah Dukes was released but failed to capitalize on the chance. Maxwell hit only .100 in spring training going 5-for-50 with 21 strikeouts. He does offer some power and speed but his lack of contact has held him back. With a career minor league batting average of just .258, don’t look for any help in the average category. He did not start the first two games after being recalled but did the start Saturday going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.

SP – Wade LeBlanc – could see a start or two for San Diego with Chris Young going on the disabled list. Threw the ball well in spring, compiling a 1.96 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 23 innings, though he only struck out 5.8 hitters per nine in nine starts last season. He could have some value in NL only leagues if he stays in the rotation for a longer period of time.

SS - Juan Castro – starts at shortstop with Jimmy Rollins on the disabled list.

OF – Eric Hinske – could see a few more at bats at first base in Atlanta.

SP – Kris Benson – only if you play in an upside down league where you are trying to accumulate the worst stats.

2010 Waiver Wire – Week 2

Here is a look at some of the players to target for pick up in week 2 of your fantasy baseball season.

12 / 15 team mixed league:

OF – John Bowker / Jim Edmonds – both look to be in platoon roles with their respective clubs although as both are left-handed hitters, they will see the majority of the at bats. Each has some power upside so if your team is short in projected home runs, either one would be worth grabbing.

SP – Ian Kennedy – looked like the real deal in his first start and minor league numbers support the foundation for success going forward.

SP – Gio Gonzalez – has always had the stuff to dominate and pile up strikeouts but control had always been an issue. If he is able to consistently duplicate his delivery like his first start, he could turn out to be a great pick up.

SP – C.J. Wilson – I believe for now; decent mix of pitches combined with the right mindset and a decent offense behind him leads me to believe he can win 13-14 games this year.

American League Only:

SS – Julio Lugo – depending on how long Brian Roberts is out, Lugo should get a chance to see extended playing time.

RP – Jim Johnson – Mike Gonzalez has been vunerable early in the season for the Baltimore Orioles. Johnson is a good handcuff if you own Gonzalez.

National League Only:

2B – Omar Infante - it was only a matter of time until Chipper Jones pulled up lame.

2B / 3B Jeff Keppinger – looks like he will see time at a variety of infield positions for the Houston Astros. Has 11 at bats already this week.

SS/3B/OF - Jerry Hairston Jr. – versatility means he will see a decent amount of at bats this week and chip in a few stolen bases. Has 10 at bats so far in week 1.

OF – Tyler Colvin – after his good start in spring training and with the Chicago Cubs offense not hot out of the gate, Lou Pinella has to give Colvin some extra player time, in addition to being able to justify keeping him in the major leagues and not stalling his development.

C – Miguel Olivo – depending on the number of catchers you need on your roster, Olivo has been getting equal time with Chris Ianetta.

SP - Rodrigo Lopez - had a successful first start and the move to National League should help his strikeout numbers.

RP – Sean Marshall – Lou Pinella seems to like him too much in the bullpen to give him a shot as a starter unless there are injuries, but I think he could have some success if he gets the opportunity. Worth stashing if you have quite a few reserve spots in your roster.
